WhileLin Shayewould love to see Elise get her ownInsidiousspinoff, she would have no problem at all if the horror series were to be wrapped up withThe Red Door. The fifth installment of the horror movie series,Insidious: The Red Door, is now playing in movie theaters. The film features Shaye reprising her role as Elise Rainier, a role she’s been playing since the first film was released in 2010. Including the newest movie, Shaye has appeared in every installment of the series, making Elise one of the franchise’s most familiar characters.
In a new interview withScreenRant, Shaye comments on the possibility of theInsidiousseries ending. This follows recent comments from producer Jason Blum that the franchise was going on a long hiatus, at the every least, following the release ofInsidious 5. Shaye supports the franchise ending, suggesting that sometimes it’s best to walk away before it gets to be too much. With that said, Shaye suggestsInsidious: The Red Doorwould serve just fine as the ending to the story if that’s what ends up happening.

From the interview:
“I think everything has a beginning, middle and end, ultimately. I think sometimes, especially in storytelling, it’s enough already, as they say, because I know we’ve all seen shows that we went, “Oh my god, they’re still [going]?” There’s especially series that get like that, “Isn’t that over already? Is this done already?” [Laughs] I think it’s very savvy to be a creator and know when it’s good to have an ending, and I think this was a really wonderful — it doesn’t mean the world of Insidious is necessarily over, but it does mean that particular story has a beginning, middle and end now, and I applaud it. I think it’s a wonderful script, and a wonderful story.”

Imogen Could Return in Lin Shaye’s Desired Spinoff
Shaye is content with the franchise ending, but she also teases that she has some ideas for an Elise-focusedInsidiousmovie, and she might even write the treatment herself. Shaye teases how the spinoff could explore more of Elise in The Further, though she also notes how she won’t be pursuing the potential project unless she gets the necessary permissions from Blumhouse. As Shaye explains when asked about a potential spinoff:
“Yeah, I have some ideas, I’ve thought about doing a little treatment with some thoughts I have about where she is in The Further, what she could be doing in The Further. It opens up your own imagination, and because The Further is not defined at all, except for there being fog on the floor, it’s sort of all we know for sure. [Laughs] So, I definitely have some thoughts that I really may put into action and do a lookbook or something with my son, we’ve talked about that. He’s a very savvy writer and creator. I wouldn’t do anything, obviously, without approval of any kind, but in terms of my own imagination, there’s some nice stories I can come up with.”
Shaye then comments on the events of the fourth movie,Insidious: The Last Key. She admits that she was bothered by the way that film ended and teased that her spinoff could bring back Elise’s niece, Imogen (Caitlin Gerard), with that character essentially following in her aunt’s footsteps with her psychic abilities. Shaye explains:
“I mean, that was something that always — it didn’t bother me, but I always wondered why they ended it like that if they weren’t going to continue on some other road with those same characters. I have no idea, it’s been a finicky franchise in that way where they’ve set up other characters that have come through different installments that we never see again, or that storyline never goes further, so — pardon the expression — maybe we’ll all end up in The Further. [Laughs] It’s possible, we’ve really created a true universe of people, so it’s sort of open-ended, totally, which is a beautiful way to create.”
