Unfortunately,Madame Webcontinues to weave more bad press, as the Spider-Man spinoff is now the holder of lowest Rotten Tomatoes score, and worst opening in the Sony franchise. The comic book outing, which stars Dakota Johnson as a paramedic who develops clairvoyant abilities, failed to make in six days what the previously mauledMorbiusmade in its three-day opening. To date,Madame Webhas brought in just 25.8 million in the United States and Canada (viaBox Office Mojo).

To put that figure into context,Morbiusmade $39 million,Venommade $80.2 million, andVenom: Let There Be Carnagemade $90 million. Outside just the Sony Spider-Verse series, the likes ofSpider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, The Amazing Spider-Manmovies, Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire’sSpider-Mansaga, and the MCU ventures all leftMadame Webin the dust. All of which makes Madame Web the lowest grossing Spider-Man-based movie that Sony has produced.

Will Madame Web Spawn Any Sequels?

Madame Web

Directed by S. J. Clarkson from a screenplay she co-wrote with Claire Parker and the writing team of Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless,Madame Webstars Dakota Johnson in the title role, alongside Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts, and Adam Scott. Coming as part of Sony’s Spider-Man spinoff universe,Madame Webfollows Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who develops the power to see the future… and realizes she can use that insight to change it. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women bound for powerful destinies.

Both the critical and commercial response toMadame Webhas not been good, with Johnson revealingthat “drastic changes” were madeto the script after she signed onto the Sony project. Despite the poor reception, both Johnson and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventurahave expressed their hopes for a sequel. See what di Bonaventura had to say below…

“What’s great about their characters is that, funny enough, there’s probably more comic book material written about the various Spider-Women than Madame Web herself. They each have their own comic books. So, hopefully, coming out of this first experience with Madame Web, the audience is going to embrace us enough to be able to tell the next story.

you’re able to take those three characters much further along in the next story, and Madame Web still hasn’t mastered all of her skills either. If we got to do a sequel, one of the interesting things we would be able to see is Madame Web trying to master her new powers and often failing. So, we now realize the downside of having these abilities. I think that would make for good, dramatic material where the person is still learning what they’re doing.”
