Marisa Tomeirecently said that she had to contact herKing of Staten Islandcostar Pete Davidson after she realized that she never received payment for the role! In an interview withRolling Stone, the Academy Award winner, who portrayed a fictionalized version of theSaturday Night Livestar’s mom in the 2020 film, opened up about what it was like working with Davidson on the 2020 movie.
Davidson co-wroteThe King of Staten Islandwith director Judd Apatow and Dave Sirus. When speaking to Rolling Stone on Thursday about her work on the project, Tomei revealed that she had called the comedian the same day to inquire about why she was stiffed on her paycheck for her work in the comedy-drama.
“I actually just was talking to Pete today, because I was like, ‘I never got paid for that. Did you? In this age of transparency, can we talk?'” theSpider-Man: No Way Homeactress toldRolling Stone’s associate editor Angie Martoccio. “In this age of transparency, can we talk?”
Tomei continued, “But despite that, I had a rollicking good time. Judd’s approach to improv – which is extensive – I was intimidated. I’m with all these stand-up [comics]. It was so freeing. Really changed how I approach each character going forward.”

Marisa Tomei Played Margie Carlin
Tomei has played her fair share of memorable New Yorkers, mining her Big Apple roots for each part. From her Acadmey Award-winning role as Mona Lisa Vito in 1992’s My Cousin Vinnyto the famed Aunt May in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a character who she campaigned to be bisexual in the final film trilogy, believing that after Uncle Ben’s death, Aunt May would have turned to women (obviously, she wasn’t so happy with Happy).
InKings of Staten Island, Tomei played Margie Carlin, a fictionalized version of Davidson’s mother. Partially based on the comedian’s Staten Island upbringing, Margie is the widowed mother of the 24-year-old Scott, played by Davidson, a would-be tattoo artist with a case of arrested development. Speaking toThe Los Angeles Times, Tomei said that Davidson’s real mother helped her prepare for the role:
“Oh, God, I wish she was like a family member! I spoke to Pete’s mom [Amy Davidson] a bunch, and she blew me away with her level of patience, not just for him but for doing service, for doing good. Maybe because Pete had challenges growing up or because [he and his sister, Casey] lost their dad, she just had infinite space for him to grow into his own, which really is parallel to the movie. But she really, genuinely is like that. I marveled.”
When Martoccio asked Tomei if she understood “the whole Pete Davidson ‘thing,” alluding to all the famous women he has dated, including his former fiancé Ariana Grande, Kate Beckinsale, Kim Kardashian, Phoebe Dynevor, and Larry David’s daughter Cazzie David, Tomei responded with a resounding affirmative.
“He’s just so f**king real, and he’s unfiltered, but very sensitive. So he’s almost an irresistible combination… And he’s good-looking, even though I played … let’s just put the mom thing aside. Let’s, like, never mention that again.”
