While there have been murmurs ofJoss Whedonpossibly directing the solo adventureCaptain Marvelfor Disney and Marvel, it seems the two studios may have something else different in mind. They actually want a female director, and have approachedAngelina Joliefor the job. This has not been confirmed or denied by either Marvel or Disney.

The news comes from the more respectable, yet still trashy, celebrity and lifestyle magazine OK!, who are usually fifty-fifty with their scoops and rumors. According to the publication, Disney executives have offeredAngelina Jolie$20 million for the directed gig on Captain Marvel. They decided to go after the actress-turned-director after watching her second feature filmUnbroken, which opened Christmas day. An inside source claims those involved with the decision making process at Disney and Marvel were beyond impressed with her skills in bringing the story of Olympic athlete turned POW Louis Zamperini to the big screen.

Joss Whedon

Anyone who has seenUnbrokenwill likely be okay withAngelina Joliedirecting Captain Marvel if this rumor actually comes to pass. The biopic is a fast-paced, action-packed and very brutal experience that is heightened by heartbreaking emotional drama. Just the right mix for Captain Marvel, the story of Carol Danvers. In the comic books, Danvers is subjected to otherworldly radiation that transformers her into a super powered warrior who eventually takes the mantle of Captain Marvel to help protect the cosmos. Captain Marvel will be the first female-driven solo feature for Marvel, and it seems Marvel is following DC’s path in bringing the movie to fruition. Last year Warner Bros. hiredMichelle Maxwell MacLarento direct theirWonder Womanstandalone feature. Says the insider:

“Having a female director is a priority for [Marvel].”

The unnamed source of this rumor goes onto say thatAngelina Jolieis quite keen on taking the job:

“She never thought she’d be in such huge demand as a director, and to be courted by Marvel after the Sony fiasco is a huge pat on the back.”

Angelina Joliemade her directorial debut with the 2011 featureIn the Land of Blood and Honey. She has teamed up with husbandBrad Pittfor her third feature,By the Sea, in which she will actually appear on screen. She has also set upAfrica, which follows big game elephant poachers and may also, once again, starBrad Pittin the lead role. What do you think? IsAngelina Joliethe right director for Captain Marvel? Or are you hoping for the return of Marvel’s golden boyJoss Whedon?
