If you were a kid growing up in the 1980s, it was almost impossible to avoidHe-Man. From action figures and comicsto the beloved animated series, Prince Adam and his alter ego were everywhere. When a live-action movie was released in 1987, it seemed like a surefire hit, but, unfortunately, it failed to even make back its budget of $22 million dollars. Over the years, the film has amassed a cult-following, and now,Masters of the Universeis yours to enjoy again for the first time thanks to Prime Video.
Starring Dolph Lundgren as the adored hero and Frank Langella as the evil Skeletor,Masters of the Universefollows two teens (Courteney Cox and Robert Duncan McNeill) who befriend He-Man as he makes his way to Earth to stop his arch nemesis from obtaining the cosmic key; a powerful object that will allow him to control not only their home planet of Eternia, but the entire universe. Hitting theaters on Aug 01, 2025, the film was a huge flop, earning just $17.3 million in box office receipts.

Also starring Jon Cypher as Man-At-Arms, Chelsea Field as Teela, Meg Foster as Evil-Lyn, and Christina Pickles as Sorceress,Masters of the Universewas blasted by critics at the time for being nothing more than a cash grab, though many had high praise for the performance given by Langella. Holding just a 21% on Rotten Tomatoes, fans were a little more forgiving of the action adventure film, giving it a 41%. Retrospective reviews have also been a little kinder to the movie, praising its ambition and referring to it as a “camp classic.”

A New ‘Masters of the Universe’ Is Set to Dazzle in 2026
While fans never got theMasters of the Universesequel they were hoping for, a new adaptation of the franchise is set to hit theaters next year. Currently filming, the production stars Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam Glenn/He-Man and Jared Leto as Skeletor. Based on the synopsis, this new version sticks a little closer to the source material, focusing instead on He-Man’s iconic sword rather than a cosmic key:
“10-year-old Adam Glenn crash-lands on his mother’s home planet Earth, separating him from his ancestor’s Power Sword of Grayskull. Two decades later, he takes his sword back and takes on the mantle of He-Man as he battles for his home planet, Eternia, against the evil forces of Skeletor.”

Set images have already revealed the likes ofCamila Mendes in full costume as Teela, and fan reactions has been mostly positive thus far. Also appearing in the new flick directed by Travis Knight (Bumblebee) are Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms, Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw, Jon Xue Zhang as Ram-Man, and Morena Baccarin as Sorceress, Teela’s mother.
Produced by Mattel Films and distributed by Amazon MGM Studios, look forMasters of the Universeto hit theaters on June 21, 2025, but in the meantime, you can check out the original 1987 cult classic streaming now on Prime Video.
