After working withHenry Cavillon the upcoming featureArgylle, directorMatthew Vaughncouldn’t help but think back upon his dream job of helming a new Superman movie. Previously, Cavill played the superhero in Zack Snyder’sMan of Steelalong with the crossover moviesBatman v Superman: Dawn of JusticeandJustice League. Plans to makeMan of Steel 2never materialized, despite DC fans campaigning for the unmade sequel.
While promoting his new movieThe King’s Manin an interview withThe Wrap, Vaughn said he was lobbying to direct aSupermanfilm before Snyder was given the keys by casting Cavill inMan of Steel. The plan at Warner Bros. is to reboot Superman with writer Ta-Nehisi Coates envisioning a new version of Kal-El, but Vaughn still thinks there’s enough room in this world for Cavill to get another movie. What he also wants to see happen with the next film is for Superman to bring back the bright and colorful tone of the Christopher Reeve movies.
“I was desperate to do a Superman film. Desperate. I pitched a big Superman movie before they made Man of Steel. I just got to work with Henry Cavill, which was lovely, on Argylle and he’s unbelievable in it. I still think there’s room for a new Superman film, but a proper Superman film. A colorful, fun Superman movie. Not a dark one.”
As Matthew Vaughn explains, dark superhero movies might work just fine with certain characters like Batman, but he feels it’s not quite the same with the Man of Steel. The filmmaker believes thatSupermanmovies should be “fun,” suggesting that Clark Kentleave all of the brooding to his pal Bruce Wayne. He suggests that going for a lighter tone was what helpedWonder Womanfind success.
“I just thought it was a mistake putting the Batman vibe into the Superman world. I just think they’re two separate — they’re just not relatable in any way, in my mind. It should be fun. I mean, look, The Dark Knight was obviously different, and it made sense and it was brilliant, as a film and as a comic. But Superman was always… I loved the [Richard] Donner Superman movie, and I think Wonder Woman worked because, I think, Wonder Woman was basically remaking [Donner’s] Superman in a weird way. Yeah, I love Superman.”
The release ofZack Snyder’s Justice Leagueon HBO Max earlier this year led to an increased interest from fans for Cavill to get another movie, perhapsMan of Steel 2.That decision is not up to Cavill, but over the years, the actor has been open about his desire to revisit that role if the opportunity comes back along. Just recently, he said that the"cape is still in the closet,“meaning he’s ready to suit back up in the blue-and-red tights and fly back into action the second the studio gives him that call.
