Legendary director Francis Ford Coppola’sMegalopolishas now screened for potential buyers and distributors, and it sounds like the filmmaker was right to put everything on the line for this epic sci-fi drama. Coming courtesy ofDeadline, who were in attendance at the screening,Megalopolisis “is crackling with ideas that fuse the past with the future, with an epic and highly visual fable that plays perfectly on an IMAX screen.”
We also now have a much better idea of whatMegalopoliswill be about, withthe story following Adam Driveras “an ambitious architectural idealist” named Cesar who faces a “sworn enemy” in city Mayor Frank Cicero, played by Giancarlo Esposito.

“He covers complex themes in a remarkably brief two hours and 13 minutes, not including credits. The destruction of a New York City-like metropolis after an accident brings clashing visions of the future.
The debate becomes whether to embrace the future and build a utopia with renewable materials, or take a business-as-usual rebuild strategy, replete with corruption and power brokering. In between their struggle is the mayor’s socialite daughter Julia (Nathalie Emmanuel), a restless young woman who grew up around power and is looking for meaning in her life.”

The movie is described as “a cautionary tale” of what can happen when the human spirit is poisoned by of “greed, corruption and narcissism.” If this isstarting to sound a little familiar, the report goes on to say thatMegalopolis“could not be more timely in an election year and a moment of heightened polarization and misinformation meant to spread agendas, sway the public and influence policy.”
Megalopolis Will Tackle Some Timely Political Themes
Others in attendance included Angelica Huston, Nicolas Cage, Andy Garcia, Spike Jonze, Al Pacino, Jon Favreau, Colleen Camp, Roger Corman, Darren Aronofsky, Cailee Spaeny, Shia LaBeouf, and Talia Shire, with Coppola delivering a heartfelt statement prior to showing the movie.
“Dear Friends,
As heard from me before: “I believe in America.”
If I could leave you with one thought after you see my new film, it would be this: Our founders borrowed a Constitution, Roman Law, and Senate for their revolutionary government without a king, so American History could neither have taken place nor succeed as it did without classical learning to guide it.”
