Back in September, producersWalter F. Parkesand Laurie MacDonald revealed that their languishing sequelMen in Black 4will actually reinvent the entire franchise, with plans for a newreboot trilogy. The producers also revealed that original starsWill SmithandTommy Lee Joneswill likely not be back to reprise their roles as Agent J and Agent K, but very little is known about the story at this time. The producers recently spoke withBBC News Beat, where Laurie MacDonald revealed that they are eyeing a “prominent” female character to become a new agent.

“There will be a prominent woman in black in the fourth [film].”

Back in May 2013, screenwriterOren Uzielsigned on to write the screenplays for bothMen in Black 4and22 Jump Street, which was released last year. Leaked emails from the Sony hack revealed that the studio was considering aJump Street and Men in Blackcrossover, but that still hasn’t come to fruition yet. BothWill SmithandTommy Lee Jonesweren’t expected to come back for the crossover either, butWalter F. Parkesteased thatWill Smithmay actually return.

“Never count Will out.”

It isn’t known ifWalter F. Parkesand Laurie MacDonald are still developing the sequel fromOren Uziel’s script, or if they have brought on a new screenwriter. Also unknown is whether or not directorBarry Sonnenfeld, who directed the first threeMen in Blackmovies, will come back for this rebooted trilogy.Walter F. Parkesadded that it is still early in the development process, but they look forward to revisiting this world.

“We are quite early on in it. We sort of looked at the first three in retrospect as a bit of a trilogy. We tried to tell a story about those two characters and that relationship. It sounds silly because it’s a fun, science fiction comedy but when you work on these things you sort of attempt to find some thematic basis underneath it. Now we are looking at a reinvention. But it’s a wonderful world to get back into.”

The originalMen In Blackintroduced Linda Fiorentino as Laurel Weaver, who became an MIB at the end of the movie, but she did not return for the sequels Men In Black II orMen in Black 3. Who do you think should play this “prominent” female agent inMen in Black 4? We’ll keep you posted as soon as we have any official details regarding this sci-fi sequel.
