Director Christopher McQuarrie has teased howMission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Twowill go even bigger and better than not only its predecessor, but prior McQuarrie/Cruise collaborations. Speaking withCollider, the filmmaker revealed that the sequel will involve an underwater sequence to rival that of bothMission: Impossible – Rogue Nationand the 2014 sci-fi flickEdge of Tomorrow, with McQuarrie and Tom Cruise using what they’ve learned, making improvements, and no doubt delivering another cinematic thrill.
“Tom and I are constantly reevaluating our own work and asking ourselves how we could have done it better. We’ve done underwater sequences previously. We’ve worked underwater in Edge of Tomorrow, and we worked underwater in Rogue Nation, and we left very dissatisfied with those sequences. And we analyze why we were dissatisfied. What were all the factors working against us? The biggest being, not having real knowledge in that area. Everything you’re looking at in Dead Reckoning is the application of knowledge from previous sequences.”

Revealing that the underwater sequence required Cruise to hold his breath for as long as six and a half minutes (longer than the already impressive timeof six minutes achieved by Cruise inRogue Nation), McQuarrie called the filming “physically punishing” adding that he would not “recommend it to anybody who doesn’t want to make a lifestyle out of it.”
As well as the action scene underwater, McQuarrie continued the hype forMission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Twosaying that it also features an aerial sequence that will topthe critically acclaimed stuntsdemonstrated in Cruise’s hugely successful legacy sequel,Top Gun: Maverick.

Mission: Impossible 8 Also Features a Major Sequence in the Arctic
Not only willMission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Twosee Tom Cruise once again take to the depths underwater, but it will also feature a major sequence set in the Arctic. A sequence that returning star Hayley Atwell has aptly teased would have been impossible for any other production.
“Nothing has ever been filmed in the Arctic for a movie of this scale. People thought that it would be impossible, and luckily, Team Mission just came in and totally invalidated that belief system,”the actress revealed. “I can say that the main focus was the safety of the cast and the crew, but also the respect of the landscape out there. The territory feels unowned in a way because it’s so majestic and raw. At times, in minus 55 with a wind chill, having to get action dialogue in that takes a tremendous amount of organization and focus. So how they put that together and weave that into the story, I don’t know, but it will remain the most extraordinary place I’ve ever been on this planet and will probably ever go.“
