Earlier this month,Mystery Science Theater 3000creator Joel Hodgson unveiled hisKickstarter campaignfor a reboot of the beloved series. In just a few short weeks, the campaign has raised $3.4 million, enough to fund six new episodes, while the creator has announced several new cast members. Yesterday, Joel Hodgson posted another update on hisKickstarterpage, unveiling the final cast member,Patton Oswalt, who is playing the new Evil Henchman.
The new Henchman will be called TV’s Son of TV’s Frank, the son of TV’s Frank from the original series. He joins a cast that includes new host Jonah Ray,Felicia Dayas the new Mad Scientist, Kinga Forrester,Dr. Forrester’s daughter, Hampton Yount as Crow T. Robot and Baron Vaughn as Tom Servo. In addition to this role,Patton Oswaltwill also serve as one of the show’s “guest writers.” Here’s what Joel Hodgson had to say about bringingPatton Oswalton board.
“When I started putting together my dream roster of special ‘guest writers’ for the next season of MST3K, the idea of Patton kept coming back to me. I knew he was a Mystery Science Theater fan from way back - he even moderated our 20th Anniversary Reunion panel atSan Diego Comic-Con–and I thought he’d be terrific at writing riffs. Then I started to wonder if he might be a good fit on camera, too. Remember last week, how I said my creative process usually starts with visuals, and then I work backward? Well, in this case, I first imagined Patton dressed up like TV’s Frank. I figured maybe he’d be Frank’s son, or at least a clone. But yeah: the idea of Patton wearing black lab assistant’s garb, with a big mound of silver hair and a spitcurl…? It was just really funny to me, in a visual / cross-referential / meta kind of way.”
TheMystery Science Theater 3000Kickstarter campaign has just 10 days left, and they currently 60% funded, $2 million short of their $5.5 million goal.
