Netflix has canceled bothV WarsandOctober Factionafter only one season. The shows launched on December 5th and January 23rd, respectively. Netflix made the announcement after revealing thatLocke & Keyhad received a series renewal. The streaming service did not reveal a reason behind the cancellations and they do not release their streaming numbers, so the decision was internal, based on their own data. It appears that the financial numbers were not worth what both shows had been gaining as far as streaming numbers are concerned, though that could have changed with a second season.
V Warsis a vampire drama series, which stars Ian Somerhalder and is based on Jonathan Maberry’s bestselling book of the same name. Maberry’s stories were first published in 2012 by IDW Publishing, and they debuted as a collection of prose stories that chronicles the first Vampire War. It is believed Somerhalder is already in talks withNetflixto work on a new project. It’s not clear at this time what that is, or when it will be coming out. He worked onV Warsas a director, so he could be back behind the camera for the new project.
October Factionwas also originally published by IDW. The story is based on monster hunters Fred (J.C. MacKenzie) and Deloris Allen (Tamara Taylor), who have to go into hiding while starting a new life in upstate New York. Things aren’t exactly what they seem, and the show was starting to set up some pretty dark material. Fans will have to look towards the comic book source material to see how the rest of the story could have gone had Netflix renewed it for a second season.
V-WarsandOctober Factionaren’t the only recent one-and-donestreamingdramas at Netflix. They joinMessiah,AJ and the Queen,Spinning Out,Soundtrack, andDaybreak, among others. The streaming giant is in competition with a ton of other streaming services out at the moment. Disney+, Amazon Prime, Apple, Hulu, and more are all coming out with promising original content, which doesn’t even factor in HBO and Showtime, who are also producing their own quality entertainment too. When it comes down to it, we may end up seeing Netflix get a bit more selective with their own original content in the future, as far as development is concerned,
It’s also important to note that bothV-WarsandOctober Factionwere not hits with the critics. So, we’ll have to see what comes next from Netflix as the streaming landscape continued to evolve and change. With that being said, there are more people than ever looking to streaming services for entertainment and Netflix is currently dominating with theTiger Kingdocuseries. It’s really all anyone can talk about at the moment. The Hollywood Reporterwas the first to announce the cancellations ofV-WarandOctober Faction.
