In a piece by The Hollywood Reporter, it was revealed that Netflix is planning a “major overhaul” of the homepage made specifically for TV sets, with the objective being to highlight the other forms of entertainment they have developed in more recent years. Aside from their original films and series, the streaming service has also addedsports and live eventsto their catalog, which will become more prevalent in this new design.

Chief Product Officer Eunice Kim had this to say regarding the upcoming changes to Netflix’s homepage design:

Netflix New UI

“This is not the first change we’ve made to our home page. We’ve been constantly improving it over the last 12 years, mostly behind the scenes, but now, thanks to a combination of new technology and the expansion of our entertainment offerings, we think it’s time to take a giant leap forward.”

Vertical Scrolling Is Also in Netflix’s Future Plans

Aside from the new homepage menu for television sets, which is intended to provide better recommendations and more diverse types of content, Netflix is also renovating its mobile app. This updated look for the platform is meant to evoke the feeling of scrolling a feed like TikTok or Instagram. However, instead of seeingsocial media postsfrom users, brief clips from different Netflix titles will be played to gauge user interest in the series, at which point they can choose to watch the rest.

The series follows a group of survivors after a deadly snowstorm kills millions.

“We know that swiping through a vertical feed on social media apps is an easy way to browse video content, and we also know that our members love to browse our clips and trailers to find their next obsession,” Kim would say in the same report. However, one can’t help but feel that this odd choice would pivot away from the original intentions of whoever created the show or movie being played vertically. As Netflix makes this new push toward displaying its massive library in new ways, it’s hard not to

There has been plenty of debate surrounding the validity of some of Netflix’s library of titles, with the platform being called a content mill. Now, this new design for mobile platforms seems to further cement that narrative as truth, with the service itself condensing its series into brief vertical clips for users to scroll through like a TikTok. Time will only tell if this new design leads to more engagement withNetflix original content(in horizontal viewings) or ends up as another detriment to the service and its content.
