Are you ready for some good news, everyone? Ever sinceFuturamawent off the air in 2013, people have been clamoring for more adventures with the Planet Express gang. Now that wish is finally being granted. Well maybe not adventures, but at least a brand new singular adventure. The firstnew episode of Futuramasince the show went off the air will debut next week in the form of a radioplay and will serve as a tie-in to theFuturama: Worlds of Tomorrowmobile game.
The reveal was made by Nerdist and the new episode ofFuturama, which does not have a title just yet, will be released as an episode of theNerdist Podcaston September 14. TinyCo and Chris Hardwick teamed up to make this happen and it isn’t just going to be some cheap form of promotion for theFuturama: Worlds of Tomorrowvideo game, mind you. This is the real deal. The radioplay was written by creatorsMatt Groeningand David X. Cohen and will see the entire voice cast returning to reprise their roles.
It wasn’t specified precisely what voice actors are going to come back for the episode, but it is pretty safe to assume thatBilly West(Fry, Zapp Brannigan), Katey Sagal (Leela), John DiMaggio (Bender, Zoidberg), Phil LaMarr (Hermes) and Maurice Lamarche, who voiced tons of characters during the show’s run such as Morbo, will all return. It was also stated that this will be a “fully-produced” episode ofFuturama. That means this won’t just be a cheap reading. There will be a full story, sound effects and everything fans of the show could possibly want from something like this.
It wasn’t revealed exactly how this newFuturamaepisode will tie into theWorlds of Tomorrowgame, but those who play the game can get sneak peeks of the new story, but it hasn’t been revealed exactly how that can be accomplished. The story of {Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow sees the Planet Express crew cross the universe in search of ancient alien artifacts to restore the fabric of spacetime after it is transformed by the one and only Hypnotoad. So it seems like a safe bet that Hypnatoad will factor into this new Futurama episode.
This isn’t the first time thatFuturamahas been rescued. After Fox canceled the show in 2003, Comedy Central stepped up and revived the show in 2010 for two more seasons before officially ending in 2013. Though it may not be a full-on revival ofFuturama, having the entire creative team back for a radioplay sounds like an excellent way tocontinue the series. Even if it is just for one episode. Who knows? Maybe this could be the first of many new adventures for the Planet Express gang. Either way, this is great news for those who have wanted moreFuturamasince the finale.
