While plenty ofStar Warsfilm projects have been announced and are in various stages of development, there are only a handful that seem like they may actually ever end up happening. While projects likeRian Johnson’s trilogyor Patty Jenkins’Star Wars: Rogue Squadronfeel farther out or not possible at all, there are other feature films that feel far more plausible.Star Wars: Starfighteralready has a director in Shawn Levy and a star in Ryan Gosling, andThe Mandalorian and Groguhas already wrapped filming. Another major project that appears to be underway is aStar Warstrilogy being developed by Simon Kinberg — and according to Kinberg, he already knows he’s drawing inspiration from anotherStar Warstitle.

In an interview withNerdtropolis, Kinberg discussed his career and how theStar Warstelevision seriesAndorwill serve as an inspiration for hisStar Warstrilogy. “There’s a ton of wildly talented folks that want to do great work. I was super-inspired and just sort of awestruck by what Tony Gilroy did withAndor,” he explained. “I thought that was about as good of science fiction storytelling as you can do in any franchise.” The writer/director isn’t the only one who loves the series— both seasons boast an impressive 96% “Fresh” rating on the review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes.

Kinberg’s time developing hisStar Warstrilogy has also been a surreal experience for the creator, who enthused, “It’s not even a dream come true — I couldn’t have dreamed of it; just to be told there’d be more movies would have been unbelievable. To be allowed on the set of any of them was already a dream. My enthusiasm only grows with working on and around it." The fact that Kinberg name-checkedAndorand its grounded and intense take on the galaxy far, far away seems like a glaring indication of the directions his trilogy could take.

Simon Kinberg’s ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy is Still Alive and Kicking

Kathleen Kennedy revealed in February 2025 thatKinberg’s trilogy would initiate a new saga in theStar Warsuniverseand help shape future projects for the next iteration of the massive franchise. Following the wildly mixed reception of the ninth and final film in theSkywalkersaga, titledThe Rise of Skywalker, it makes sense that Kennedy and the rest of the team at Lucasfilm would want to start a new trilogy, fresh and free from the constraints of the Skywalker story.

There’s currently no publicly announced production start date for Kinberg’s first film, although Kennedy toldDeadlinein February that the Lucasfilm team was pleased with how Kinberg’s film was progressing in the pre-production phase and expected to see the script in June. Moreover, no substantial updates on the script or story details of the movies have been released since then. Kinberg’s latest burst of enthusiasm and vocal inspiration fromAndoris proof that the project is still alive and kicking, however — givingStar Warsfans hope that the franchise still has a bright future beyond successful television shows.
