Warning: Minor spoilers forSquid Game.

Netflix’s wildly popular seriesSquid Gameis no stranger to violence and gore. After all, it’s a show in which contestants fight to the death for a massive cash prize by playing seemingly simple children’s games. Its second season recently dropped on the platform, andthe dystopian thriller did its best to up the ante this time around. The latest season might have slightly less gore than its predecessor, but it still packs a bloody punch across its seven-episode run. While some have said it lacks the same gravitas and emotional shock as Season 1,Squid Game’sreturn still manages to tell quite a gruesome story with plenty of scenes that are hard to watch.

The new season picks up two years after Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) was the sole survivor of the games and subsequently walked away with 45.6 billion won. However, instead of living a life of luxury, Gi-hun chose to spend his time searching for those responsible for the horrendous games. Having finally found them, he’s subsequently pulled back into the games. Believing he and his newfound ally, Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon), can bring them down from the inside, Gi-hun willingly agrees to reenter the bloody playing field. Unfortunately, when he realizes the GPS tracker in his fake tooth has been removed, Gi-hun is on his own as Hwang Jun-ho desperately searches for his location on the outside. As a result, Gi-hun must once again participate in the games just like any other player.

Gruesome and gory, just like the first season, viewers are introduced to abrand-new set of challenges in Season 2. As Gi-hun does his best to warn the other participants of the games’ true brutality, only some care to listen. Tensions subsequently rise when they each vote on whether to continue playing the horrific games or return home. Unfortunately, it all culminates in one of the bloodiest and most difficult scenes to watch this season.

Squid Game - Season 2

Read Our Season 2 Review

Without question,Squid Game’schallenges arerife with blood and gore. However, the most gruesome scene this season takes place outside the scope of the games when the players’ infighting results in a handful of deaths. During the latter part of the season, a regular bathroom break results in a violent altercation between the male players. When voting to go home or stay results in a tie, Thanos/Choi Su-bong (Choi Seung-hyun) attempts to sway others to keep playing the violent games. However, he does so with coercive tactics while in the bathroom.

One of the Most Underrated Action Movies of 2024 Has Suddenly Landed on Netflix

The movie boasts a score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Irritated by Thanos’ continued bullying, Player 333/Lee Myung-gi (Im Si-wan) steps in to put an end to his efforts. However, given the pair’s history, it doesn’t take long for a fight to begin. As a result, everyone in the bathroom joins in as the Os, the people who want tocontinue the games, pit themselves against the Xs, the people who want to end the games and go home. Bloody and brutal, Myung-gi stabs Thanos with a fork before hiding in a stall as the chaos descends upon the others. A total of five players are killed in the fight, including Thanos and two other Os, which means those who wish to leave are now in the majority.

When the Players Turn On One Another, Only the Creator’s Win

What makes the bathroom scene so difficult to watch isn’t necessarily the blood and gore but rather what the altercation means in the wider scope of the gamesthose players have been forced to play. Make no mistake, the scene is gory and terrible to watch simply because it’s violent and bloody. However, when viewers consider what that altercation means about how the violence and cash have changed the players involved, the situation is terrible because it’s sad. The level of brutality people are prepared to achieve in exchange for money seemingly has no bounds in the series. The bathroom scene, in particular, is the manifestation of that notion.
