It was believed that directorGuillermo del Torowill start work on his long-awaited sequelPacific Rim 2after he puts the finishing touches on his haunted house thrillerCrimson Peak, which is set for release on October 16. Last week, an unconfirmed report revealed that Warner Bros. is delayingPacific Rim 2, pushing production back from a fall 2015 start to sometime in 2016. As it turns out, that report was only half-true, withThe Hollywood Reporterrevealing that the sequel has been delayed indefinitely, and may even be canceled entirely.

The originalPacific Rimonly made $101.8 million at the domestic box office, but performed much better internationally, taking in $309.2 million for a worldwide tally of $411 million. Unfortunately, the movie cost a whopping $190 million, and it is believed that the original movie’s cost lead to uncertainty about the sequel at Legendary.Pacific Rimdid “exceptional” business in China, where Legendary is heavily invested, but this report claimsPacific Rim 2may not be worth the effort.

The studio set an August 4, 2017release datethis past spring, but if this report is true, Legendary may move a different project into that late-summer release date. Now it isn’t known what directorGuillermo del Torowill work on next, afterCrimson Peak. The filmmaker recently parted ways on the upcoming DC Comics adaptationJustice League Dark, after the filmmaker himself hinted that he may not have time to direct that project. WithPacific Rim 2no longer moving forward, we’ll have to wait and see if he will return toJustice League Dark, or if he will start developing a different project.

Pacific Rim 2was said to bring back everyone who survived the original, including Jaeger pilots Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi), along with scientists Dr. Newton Geiszler (Charlie Day) and Gottlieb (Burn Gorman), andRon Perlman’s Hannibal Chau.Guillermo del Torohas also teased that he wants to makePacific Rim 3as well, but, barring some sort of miracle, that won’t happen. No official plot details were revealed forPacific Rim 2.

IfPacific Rim 2is dead in the water, what do you thinkGuillermo del Torowill move on to next? Perhaps he could use this time to get the long-awaited sequelHellboy 3off the ground withRon Perlman. Ironically,Guillermo del Tororevealed in a JuneinterviewthatHellboy 3may happen, ifPacific Rim 2is a big box office hit. Now thatPacific Rim 2may never happen, do you think this closes the coffin onHellboy 3?
