More than a month after the start of production, the first ever live-action Star Wars TV series has found its lead cast member. The Mandalorianwill feature (pending negotiations) Pedro Pascal in the lead role. Many details about the serious are being kept under wraps for the time being, but Pascal is going to be our latest leading man in a galaxy far, far away, and the first ever to lead a live-action small screen adaptation of the universe introduced to us by George Lucas all of those many years ago.
According to several reports,Pedro Pascalis in final negotiations with Lucasfilm to head upThe Mandalorian. His casting had been rumored previously but now several outlets have confirmed those previous reports. Pascal previously starred in prestige TV shows such as Netflix’s drug cartel dramaNarcosand HBO’s hit fantasy seriesGame of Thrones, in addition to roles in major movies likeKingsman: The Golden CircleandWonder Woman 1984, which is set to hit theaters in 2020. This will surely boost his profile quite a bit more.
Jon Favreau(Iron Man,The Jungle Book) is the chief creative force behindThe Mandalorian, serving as executive producer and writer. Production kicked off in early October. What exactly have they been filming without the lead actor? That is a great question. What we know for sure is that the series will center on a lone gunslinger making his way in the galaxy along the Outer Rim. The series takes place after the events ofReturn of the Jediand prior to the events ofThe Force Awakens, a period of time that really hasn’t been explored on screen up to this point.
The only other cast member we’ve heard about, which hasn’t yet been confirmed, isThe PredatorandRockyfranchise starCarl Weathers. Beyond that, we’ve heard that some of the episode’s directors will have minor roles. The directors that have been announced include Dave Filoni (The Clone Wars), Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones) and Bryce Dallas Howard, who has mostly directed short movies and worked as an actress in movies likeJurassic World: Fallen Kingdomup to this point in her career. Waititi is the only one with any specific information, as he’s said to be playing a droid.
This is just one of two already announced Star Wars live-action shows being produced for the Disney streaming service, Disney+. We also recently learned that Diego Luna will reprise his role as Cassian Andor in aRogue Oneprequel series, which is set to begin production next year. The Mandaloriandoes not yet have an exact premiere date, but it’s expected that the series will launch with Disney+, which is slated to release in late 2019.
