Peter Dinklageisn’t holding back with his thoughts about Disney’s live-actionSnow White and the Seven Dwarfsremake. Last year, it was announced thatWest Side Storystar Rachel Zegler would lead the newSnow Whitefilm as the titular Disney princess. As we’ve seen happen with titles likeThe Lion KingandAladdinin recent years, the film is being developed as a live-action reimagining of the animated movie.

Speaking about the film on Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast on Monday, Dinklage expressed his frustration with the Disney remake. For his part, Dinklage takes exception to how some fans have been praising Disney’s decision to cast a Latina actress while missing the bigger problem of how the Snow White story portrays its titular dwarfs. The actor doesn’t seem to feel that Disney deserves to get the credit for being “progressive” with Zegler’s casting if the character’s seven best friends are still portrayed the same way. Here’s how Dinklage explains it on the podcast.

Rachel Zegler Is Snow White in Disney’s Live-Action Remake

“I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White. You’re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me… You’re progressive in one way and you’re still making that f–king backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together, what the f–k are you doing man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox? I guess I’m not loud enough.”

Snow White Is Just the Latest Disney Movie to Get the Live-Action Treatment

Disney’s strategy of taking classic animated movies and remaking them in live-action is obviously nothing new. The House of Mouse has been at it for years, and because these remakes have proven to be very financially successful, Disney’s been slowly working their way through their entire animated library of titles. It was just a matter of time before they got toSnow White and the Seven Dwarfs, though Peter Dinklage is clearly hoping the film will be making some big changes to the way it portrays Doc, Dopey, Bashful, Sneezy, Happy, Grumpy, and Sleepy.

Just recently, it was announced that Andrew Burnap had been cast in a mystery role for the film, leading to speculation the Tony Award winner will be the Prince or even the Huntsman. It was also announced thatWonder Womanstar Gal Gadot will be taking on a villainous role as the Evil Queen in the movie. It’s not yet clear what the plan is for the seven dwarfs.

Disney’sSnow White and the Seven Dwarfslive-action remake does not yet have an official release date. Marc Webb is directing the feature with Marc Platt producing. The script comes from Benj Pasek and Justin Paul who previously worked on the musicalsLa La LandandThe Greatest Showman. Production is slated to start in the spring in the U.K. More casting announcements are likely to come in the near future.
