Fox has ordered a thrilling new event series based on its hit series,Prison Break, it was announced today by Dana Walden and Gary Newman, Chairmen and CEOs of Fox Television Group. An immediate critical and ratings hit when the original series premiered in the fall of 2005, the newevent serieswill hit the ground running, reuniting series starsWentworth MillerandDominic Purcellas brothers Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows. While Michael seemingly died in the 2009 TV movie Prison Break: The Final Break, Gary Newman toldEntertainment Weeklythat may not have been the case, hinting that Michael may not even have the brain tumor that plagued him during the series.

“We all who watched the show and loved it thought that Michael had died. (Series creator)Paul Scheuringcame in with a great twist that explains that he didn’t die, and what he’s been doing in the interim. The script that I read, it (the brain tumor) wasn’t addressed, so I don’t know whether that’s been somehow taken care of or not.”

The original producing team, includingPrison Breakseries creatorPaul Scheuring,Neal H. Moritz, Marty Adelstein andDawn Olmsteadwill return to executive-produce the new series, withPaul Scheuringserving as showrunner/writer. The original action dramaPrison Breakcentered on a young man (Wentworth Miller) determined to prove his convicted brother’s (Dominic Purcell) innocence and save him from death row by hatching an elaborate plan to escape from prison. A breakout success in its premiere season, garnering Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Television Series - Drama and Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama (Miller), as well as winning the People’s Choice Award for Favorite New TV Drama,Prison Breakthrilled audiences for four heart-pounding seasons, ending its run in May 2009. Here’s what Dana Walden had to say about this new story.

“The story unravels on an international landscape, it’s not a domestic show. I’m hoping we’ll see many of the great characters from that season return throughout the season. It has all the twists and turns you’ve come to expect from that show. We open on a very international contemporary feeling story.”

BothWentworth MillerandDominic Purcellwill next be seen in the upcoming superhero seriesDC’s Legends of Tomorrow, where they playCaptain Coldand Heat Wave, respectively. The newPrison Breakseries will start production this April, with Gary Newman adding that the event series will span between eight and 10 episodes.
