One of the most successful modern horror franchises isThe Purge. What started as a relatively humble, low-budget horror flick with a unique premise has spawned two sequels, and a forthcoming prequel. Not only that, but a TV series based in the universe ofThe Purgeis in the works and is expected to come out next year. Now, some new details on the show have been revealed and it is going to truly expand the franchise.
Blumhouse Productions founder Jason Blumrecently spoke with Den of Geek while promoting the studio’s latest movie,Happy Death Day. The executive was asked about the status ofThe PurgeTV series and what details he might be able to share. As Blum tells it, this show is going to take a look at the other 364 days a year when people aren’t legally allowed tocommit crime. Here’s what Jason Blum had to say about it.
“We’re working on kind of exploring what it’s like to live the rest of the year in a world where you can kill someone on a certain day of the year. It definitely makes you think twice if you’re driving and you give someone the finger or something like that. So we’re definitely thinking about different things that might happen in a society where killing was legal 12 hours a year. There are a lot of things that you don’t think about. You could commit a murder, and then somehow make it seem like it happened on Purge Night and get away with it. There are a lot of things that you can do with that idea, and we’re trying to think of all those different situations in that world.”
Franchise creator James DeMonaco is heavily involved in the TV series, which appears to be where he’s focusing his efforts. He isn’t directingThe Purge 4, which is officially titledThe Purge: The Islandand will tell the story of the first government-sanctioned night of violence and crime. Having the man who brought this idea to life in the first place driving the TV show should be helpful. But will a show aboutThe Purgethat doesn’t take place while people are purging actually be able to sustain and be interesting? If done correctly, yes.
The universe thatThe Purgetakes place in is rich with story and there are a lot of questions that the movies haven’t answered. As Jason Blum points out in this interview withDen of Geek, there is an awful lot to explore, but not the types of things that could really be explored in a movie.The PurgeTV series is slated to debut on USA Network and SyFy in 2018.
