Angela Kang has made a huge name for herself in the world of television which of course includesher time onThe Walking Dead. Her time with AMC Studios is far from over as she is heading back to the producer role and collaborating on a brand new series based on Rebecca Roanhorse’s Hugo Award-nominated fantasy novel,Black Sun. This news was first reported byThe Hollywood Reporter.
The book is the first installment of the author’sBetween Earth and Skyseries. The basis of the book is “inspired by the civilizations of the Americas before the arrival of Europeans and explores the decadence of power amidst the weight of history and the struggle of individuals swimming against the confines of society and their broken pasts.” The next book in the series, titledFevered Star, is scheduled to release in April next year.
WithThe Walking Deadcoming to an endafter the current season, Kang made her thoughts known by releasing a statement last year, looking back on the show’s “epic final chapter,” of which only eight episodes have so far aired. She had this to say:
“I look forward to digging in with our brilliant writers, producers, directors, cast and crew to bring this epic final chapter of Robert Kirkman’s story to life for our fans over the next two years. […]The Walking Deadflagship series has been my creative home for a decade and so it’s bittersweet to bring it to an end, but I could not be more excited to be working with Scott Gimple and AMC to developa new series for Daryl and Carol. Working with Norman Reedus and MelissaMcBride has been a highlight of my career and I’m thrilled that we get to keep telling together.”
The change fromThe Walking Deadis going to be a big one going from zombies to a whole new world and land of different beliefs and new villains who come in peace. However, Kang feels very excited about this as well as AMC Studios. Taking on the project comes with challenges as Roanhoarse writes with great detail and passion, deep characters, and story.
Roanhorse has won numerous awards for her previous works, including a Hugo Award in 2017 for a short story titled “Welcome to Your Authentic Indian Experience,” and a nomination for her previous novelTrail of Lightning. Roanhorse graduated from Yale University and lived for several years in the Navajo Nation, where she was a clerk at the Navajo Supreme Court before working as an attorney. In anNPRinterview, she discussed her writing and her research process onBlack Sunas “lifelong,” that she’s “been reading about Pre-Columbian cultures for decades. But for this book I really dug into everything from Polynesian sailing methods to what we know of the Maritime Maya to the habits of corvids. I also read a lot about crows.”
Currently AMC has not given us a release date for this new series as it is still in its early stages. However, you can catch more of the final season ofThe Walking Deadwhen it returns on February 20th, 2022, onAMCand AMC+.
