Head back to Woodsboro in the Dolby Cinema poster forScream, the fifth installment of the popular slasher movie franchise. Set to appear in theaters in January, the new movie will put Sidney Prescott in danger once again when Ghostface returns with yet another killer (orkillers) under the mask to carry out a Woodsboro massacre. Who will survive? We’ll all find out next month.
The official synopsis reads: “Twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past. Neve Campbell (“Sidney Prescott”), Courteney Cox (“Gale Weathers”) and David Arquette (“Dewey Riley”) return totheir iconic roles inScreamalongside Melissa Barrera, Kyle Gallner, Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, Dylan Minnette, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Marley Shelton, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Sonia Ammar.”

A previously released poster showcased the returning legacy cast members alongsideeveryone in the new cast, promising that the killer was someone on that poster. Could it be Sidney, Dewey, or Gale, having gone crazy after surviving four Ghostface massacres in the past? Or has someone new, perhaps with a partner, sought to finish the job that the original Ghostface killers (Billy and Stu) had tried to do in the originalScream25 years ago?
This is a Project X Entertainment Production and a Radio Silence Film presented by Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media Group. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (the filmmakers behind theacclaimed horror hitReady or Not) co-direct the movie using a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. Original screenwriter Kevin Williamson executive produces alongside Chad Villella, Gary Barber, Peter Oillataguerre, Ron Lynch, Cathy Konrad, and Marianne Maddalena.

The previousScreammovies were directed by late horror filmmaker Wes Craven. Before his death, Craven had intended to move forward with the franchise afterScream 4with plans to develop at least two more sequels. It seemed like the series was over once Craven passed away, but the new filmmakers intend to honor the series and Craven’s legacy with this new movie.
“I had been really apprehensive about doing another one,” Neve Campbell previously said of joiningScreamwithout Wes Craven’s involvement. “People had asked in the past whether I would do another one without Wes or whether I would make another one. I always felt like it’d be too difficult to do it without Wes. He was the master of these films. He did such a beautiful job on them. We were a family.”
She added, “They actually wrote me a letter and they said they basically are directors because of these films. They are directors because of Wes Craven and they’re really so excited to be a part of these films and what an honor it is to do them, and thatthey really want to do justice to Wes and honor his legacy. That meant a lot… So I thought, ‘You know what, I can do this.’ I think this could be a lot of fun and a good idea. These are people who are doing it for the love of these films. So that meant something.”
