Sex and the Cityis the next TV show to get a reboot, as a revival series is in the works at HBO Max. CalledAnd Just Like That…, three of the four original leads will be returning as the reboot series stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis. The trio will also be serving as executive producers alongside Michael Patrick King. Noticeably absent is Kim Cattrall, who played Samantha Jones on the originalSex and the Cityshow.
Sarah Jessica Parkershared a teaser announcing the new series on Instagram. “I couldn’t help but wonder… where are they now?” she writes in the caption. The brief teaser doesn’t show any footage of Parker or the other returning stars, flashing between a computer screen and different shots of New York City. With Parker providing a voiceover, the text on the computer reads, “And just like that… The story continues…”
Per Variety, theSex and the Cityrevival will followCarrie Bradshaw(Parker), Charlotte York (Davis), and Miranda Hobbes (Nixon) as they “navigate love and friendship in their 50s.” The reboot will consist of 10 half-hour episodes, but the new series could theoretically go on for additional seasons if it manages to reach the same levels of popularity as the original show.
“I grew up with these characters, and I can’t wait to see how their story has evolved in this new chapter, with the honesty, poignancy, humor and the beloved city that has always defined them,“HBO Maxhead of original content Sarah Aubrey said in a statement.
It had been rumored that a reboot ofSex and the Citywas happening with unconfirmed reports stating as much last month. Parker has also been open about her desire to revisit the series by returning to the role of Carrie Bradshaw and even addressed possible plot points if a reboot were to happen.
“I’d like to see where all of them are,” Parker said. “I’m curious, the world has changed even since the movie… technology and social media… Sexual politics and the #MeToo movement and Time’s Up… I think Carrie Bradshaw would just be so greedy to share her feelings and thoughts.”
Developed for television by Darren Star and based on the Candace Bushnell book of the same name,Sex and the Citypremiered on HBO in 1998. The series ran for six seasons before coming to an end in 2004, winning seven Emmy Awards and eight Golden Globes during that time. The whole cast got back together in 2008 for theSex and the Citymovie and did it again in 2010 withSex and the City 2. The CW aired the prequel series,The Carrie Diarieswith AnnaSophia Robb as Carrie Bradshaw, for two seasons between 2013 and 2014.
And Just Like That…is scheduled to begin production in New York City in late spring, but there’s no word yet on a possible release date on HBO Max. WhileKim Cattrall won’t be returning, it seems likely that other characters from the originalSex and the Citycould also be popping up for special appearances. We’ll find out soon enough.
