Anthony Mackie’s Captain America debut was nearly featured inSpider-Man: Far from Home. At the conclusion ofAvengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers goes back in time to deliver the Infinity Stones and ends up living the rest of his life with Peggy Carter in the past. He comes back to the present time as an elderly man and passes his torch to Mackie’s Sam Wilson character. It was a powerful moment for MCU fans to witness on the big screen and something Mackie is looking forward to doing.
Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige and creative executive Eric Carroll recently sat down to discussSpider-Man: Far From Home, which hits theaters next week. From the promotional material for the sequel, it’s evident thatPeter Parkeris going to learn how to navigate the world without his mentor around to help him out. Originally, Parker was going to receive help from another hero. Carroll explains.
“We briefly talked about bringing inFalcon as Captain Americaat the end, like maybe once Peter’s arced, and he’s sort of like leading the team, like maybe he calls in a favor. But we also thought it was really important to the arc of this movie that there not be other Avengers available to Nick Fury or Peter, so he’d have to step up and do it himself.”
SeeingAnthony Mackieas Captain America would have been a pretty great surprise for MCU fans. However, it’s clear Marvel Studios and Sony knew what they wanted to do with Peter Parker’s storyline, which included more of a solo mission. Kevin Feige had this to say about what Peter Parker is up to inSpider-Man: Far From Home.
“Ultimately,Spider-Man: Far From Homeis Spider-Man’s journey, whether any other heroes appear in it or not. It’s all about Peter stepping up. And Peter getting out of the shadow, not just of Tony but of the Avengers in general. Because by the way, he’s Spider-Man. He doesn’t need to be in the shadow of the Avengers. So other than Maria, and Nick, and Happy, and the emotional presence of Tony… You hear, he asks about Thor. He asks aboutDoctor Strangeand Captain Marvel.”
Anthony Mackie remembers the day he first learned about Falcon’s new path inAvengers: Endgame. The Russo Brothers were notoriously secretive and only let a few members of the cast get full scripts. Chris Evans was one of the lucky ones and new about Mackie’s MCU future, so he let the actor read the script at his house where they later celebrated with some tears, hugs, and adult beverages.
As for when we might see Falcon’s take on the Captain America mantle, that is unclear at the moment. There are some whispers of it happening on the upcomingFalcon and Winter SoldierDisney+ series, but that has not been confirmed. With that being said, it seems like it might be something the studio wants to introduce on the big screen. We’ll just have to wait and see.
