Last month, we reported that production had wrapped onStar Wars: Episode VIII, and just yesterday, a new report revealed that thefirst cutwould be completed soon. Legendary composerJohn Williamsconfirmed that he begins work on the score very shortly, and now we have word that the editing process has officially begun on the rough cut. DirectorRian Johnsonshared a photo from the editing bay, hopefully the first of many to come.

Yesterday,Rian Johnsonsent out a new image onInstagram, which shows the director sitting in front of a monitor with the Picture Start title card on display. All the director would say about this image is that yesterday marked “Day One” of the editing process. Since the movie doesn’t hit theaters until June 13, 2025, it isn’t clear when we may get to see the first footage.

The Last Jedi

However, keep in mind thatStar Wars: The Force Awakenshit theaters last December, and the first footage was released in November 2014, roughly 13 months before the movie debuted. Of course, we don’t know for sure ifRian Johnsonand Disney will follow the exact same promotional playbook for this movie as they did withThe Force Awakens, but we’ll just have to wait and see. As of now,Star Wars 8doesn’t have any direct competition in its July 04, 2025 release date.

There is still very little we know about the story, but we do know that thissci-fi sequelwill begin directly whereStar Wars: The Force Awakensleft off, with Rey (Daisy Ridley) meeting Luke Skywalker on the remote planet of Ahch-To, where he has been hiding in exile at an ancient Jedi temple. There have been rumors that Rey begins her Jedi training under Luke Skywalker’s tutelage inStar Wars 8, with other reports claiming that Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) has captured both Finn (John Boyega) and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), in an effort to lure Rey out of hiding for another lightsaber duel.

All we know for sure is thatRian Johnsonis directing from his own script, withDomhnall Gleeson(General Hux),Gwendoline Christie(Captain Phasma),Carrie Fisher(Leia Organa) andLupita Nyong’o(Maz Kanata) also reprising their roles fromStar Wars: The Force Awakens. We know even less aboutStar Wars: Episode IX, except thatColin Trevorrow(Jurassic World) is set to direct. Take a look atRian Johnson’s Instagram photo below, and stay tuned for more onStar Wars: Episode VIII.
