The return of Asajj Ventress and Cad Bane is a welcome one for fans. Ventress was created by George Lucas and debuted in the beloved but non-canon in Genndy Tartakovsky’s 2003 2D animated seriesStar Wars: Clone Wars, before being brought into the main canon with the computer-animatedThe Clone Warsin 2008. Cad Bane was created by George Lucas, Dave Filoni, and Henry Gilroy and debuted inStar Wars: The Clone Warsepisode “Hostage Crisis” in 2009 and became a recurring foe on the series. Both Ventress and Bane appeared inThe Clone Warsfollow-up seriesThe Bad Batch, showing them at the early point in the Galactic Empire’s formation, withTales of the Underworldlooking to expand on that timeline.

Cad Bane’s appearance inThe Book of Boba Fettmeans he survives through the originalStar Warstrilogy, but Ventress’s fate is up in the air. The character was previously killed in the 2015 novelDark Disciple, which was originally intended to be her final arc inThe Clone Wars. Yet her appearance inThe Bad Batch, set after Dark Disciple, shows that she is alive once again, with that being a major mystery for fans. It is unclear ifTales of the Underworldwill explain how she survived, but it will continue the character on the redemptive path that she had begun toward the end ofThe Clone Wars.
