The tremendous success of blockbuster Marvel movieDeadpoolhas single-handedlysparked a conversationin Hollywood about making more R-Rated superhero movies. And this notion isn’t going to go away until the first R-Rated superhero movie bombs. It’s already been noted that this August’sSuicide Squadwill be rated PG-13. But that doesn’t mean its sequel can’t have a little ‘Adults Only’ fun. DirectorDavid Ayer, who has yet to be confirmed forSuicide Squad 2, thinks that an R rating might be something to push for.
Many in Hollywood are currently pondering how to move forward in a market place where an R-rated superhero movie can and will make a lot of money. Warner Bros. has already announced aBatman v Superman: Dawn of JusticeR-rated Ultimate Cut is coming to the home market. And there’s even a rumor that it will be released in theaters. 20th Century Fox is teasing an R rating for bothWolverine 3andX-Force. But Disney and Marvel have taken a pretty firm stance, insisting that they will not cash in on the craze, and plan to stick with PG-13 fare.
Suicide Squadhas recentlyundergone reshoots, which some people believe will garner the movie an R rating. That doesn’t sound likely, though these reshoots do mean we’re getting a much more violentDC comics adventure, as they add a few extra action scenes to the mix. Speaking withMTV,David Ayerhad this to say about an R-rated sequel.
“It’s worth lobbying for. For an R movie, you have to decide to do it right out the gate, and that was never the case here. We were always going to hit the PG-13 rating. But the film is meant to be that. It’s got edge, and it’s got attitude. And it’s got its own voice…There’s a lot in the film that’s going to surprise people.”
Suicide Squadwill actually be directorDavid Ayer’s first PG-13 rated movie after a string of successfully gritty crime dramas such asEnd of WatchandStreet Kings. Having an R-rating slapped on a movie doesn’t necessarily mean it will be any good. And from the three trailers released thus far,Suicide Squaddoesn’t look like it will disappoint with its more family-friendly rating in place. And in previous interviews,Ayerhas teased that this adventure will push the boundaries of the PG-13 rating.
As of now, Warner Bros. and DC have not announcedSuicide Squad 2. They did, however, announced two untitled DC Comics movies, giving them release dates. Most believe the first date of August 02, 2025 belongs to the recently confirmedBatmansolo movie to be co-written, directed and starring Ben Affleck. While its speculated that the second new date of July 11, 2025 definitely belongs toSuicide Squad 2. Its possible that Warner Bros. doesn’t want any egg on their face after the disappointing box office ofBatman V Superman, and they could be waiting to see howSuicide Squadfares in theaters before they decided to officially announce a follow-up. We’ll have to wait and see.
