Summer Camp, a new movie from Castille Landon, is set to hit theaters with a star-studded cast and a storyline that will warm your heart. The triple threat writer, director, and actress is sure to give us a beautiful ride through comedic highs and emotional depths that no one will soon forget. If there is any similarity in her style of filmmaking, we can expectSummer Campto have some passionate scenes and an emotional storyline.

ButSummer Campis pointedly not just another movie in theAfterfranchise. While its logline is cheerful and full of emotional potential, the cast signed up so far represents a distinct kind of comedic flavor that can be expected to shape this movie differently.Summer Campis expected to be a comedy, and some of its key stars, most notablyEugene Levyand Diane Keaton, are known for being at their best when doing a certain kind of “straight-man” blasé performance in outrageous situations.Summer Campis certainly a movie to look forward to from this actress-turned-director.

Summer Camp: The Plot

Summer Campwill be heading into production next month. It tells the story of three kids that are beginning to grow up. Nora, Ginny, and Mary were all childhood best friends who spent their summers together at a sleepaway camp. But as the years pass, they begin to see each other less and less. They get older and stop attending camp as often as they used to. But when they get the chance for a summer camp reunion, they all take it. But soon, we discover that some were excited, while others went more begrudgingly.

The movie sounds like aclassic coming-of-age story. How familiar would it be to many who have spent their summers amongst the cabins and lakes of a distant sleepaway camp? It’s the perfect setting for a charming teenage biography told in the idyllic sunshine of summer vacation. But the cast hired for this comedy implies a story more complicated than your average, middle-of-the-road Hallmark movie. Landon’s story may look more ironically at the summer camp setting. There might appear on the surface to be one of these familiar places, but really, there could be much more to it. We’ll likely see many of these classic coming-of-age tropes made fun of and see a bit more chaotic story than one we might expect from walking into a story that sells the idea of three besties away at camp. Although the description on IMDb is tame and charming, what we could see in the theaters might be a lot funnier than any of us expected.

“The opportunity to work with a comedic genius like Eugene [Levy] is a dream come true as a filmmaker, and I am so grateful for the thoughtful, precise work he has already put into his character,” Landon told Deadline. “I think he’s the perfect counterpart to Diane [Keaton], and I can’t wait to see them play off one another.”

Eugene Levy and Diane Keatonare certainly the main attractions of this film. Levy seems to be the perfect choice since, after coming off the brilliant success ofSchitt’s Creek, he’s returning to starring in movies. Earlier in his career, he starred in many of theAmerican Piemovies, which seems to fit right in with theSummer Campsetting. And Landon is right to imagine that Diane Keaton is his perfect counterpart. Their comedy styles are sure to play excellently off one another. The film also stars Kathy Bates (Misery, Titanic), another ideal choice, as she is one of the great actors of her generation. Alfre Woodard is the last star announced, which is certainly not to be dismissed. Woodard is a more than capable actress known for her roles in12 Years a Slaveand appearances in numerous classic Sci-Fi films.
