The newly branded DC Studios technically began last year with the Max original animated series,Creature Commandos. However, James Gunn’sSupermanwill have a significant impact on future film and television projects moving forward. Gunn’s take on the Man of Steel has plenty of people excited, not just about this new iteration of the character, but also because of the large number of DC heroes and villains who will be featured in the film as well. One such character isMister Terrific, played byEdi Gathegi. The actor has played a Marvel character in the past, although he doesn’t like discussing it too much.

While talking on the DC Studios Showcase Official Podcast to promoteSuperman, Gathegi was asked about whether he feels that Mister Terrific ishis first real chance to play a superhero. The question was clearly intended to lead to a discussion about the actor’s brief stint in the Marvel Universe, although Gathegi provided a brief response. The actor jokingly responded, “We don’t talk about that. It’s too juicy. I’m so happy that I get a redemption arc in the new DC Universe. I’m excited to inspire a whole generation of young Black kids with this new superhero.”

First Look at New ‘Superman’ Popcorn Bucket Divides Fans on Social Media

This is one of the most creative buckets we’ve seen yet.

The character in question was Darwin, one of the young mutants recruited by Professor Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Erik Lehnsherr (Michael Fassbender) in Matthew Vaughn’s 2011 filmX-Men: First Class. Unfortunately, Darwin was killed rather quickly by Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon), almost immediately after he was recruited in the film. Overall, it felt like a waste of a character, and explains why the actor did not want to talk about it.

Darwin in X-Men: First Class

‘X-Men: First Class’ Wasted the Potential of Edi Gathegi’s Darwin

The wasted potential of certain characters inX-Men: First Classhas more to do with director Matthew Vaughn’s way of trying to up the stakes in the semi-reboot. Edi Gathegi’s Darwin was not the only character that would ultimately amount to nothing in futureX-Menfilms, as several other mutants introduced in the movie were killed off-screen and never mentioned in the sequelX-Men: Days of Future Past. Despite his untimely demise, Darwin’s powerset would have made him an interesting addition to the X-Men team.

Darwin is shown to have the ability to adapt to any given environment, such as growing gills to breathe underwater. However, Sebastian Shaw uses his powers of energy absorption to overwhelm Darwin’s adaptation, killing the mutant as if nothing. Although it happened to Darwin much faster than the rest of the supporting cast, other mutants met a similar fate off-screen between movies. Angel, Azazel, Emma, and Banshee all ended up dying and are only briefly mentioned in other films, having as much wasted potential as Darwin.

Thankfully, Gathegi has another shot at comic book movie stardom withSuperman. Mister Terrific is considered one of the smartest characters in the DC Universe, using his mental prowess to create impressive technology that he uses to fight crimes as well as solve complex mysteries and problems. Hopefully, the character is given plenty to do inSupermanand also given the chance to star in a project of his own down the line.
