In the backstory established in the first film, a young boy name John Bennett (who, when grown up, is played by Mark Wahlberg) gets a teddy bear for Christmas. After wishing upon a shooting star for Ted to come to life, he does so, much to the shock of John’s parents. WhileTedandTed 2follow the adventures of John as an adult and what his life has been like with a living toy as a best friend, the TV series will be set in the past, shortly after the events of the prologue.

Here’s an official summary of the series' plot:
“In Ted, the series, it’s 1993 and Ted’s moment of fame has passed, leaving him living with his best friend, 16-year-old John Bennett, who lives in a working-class Boston home with his parents and cousin. Ted might not be the best influence on John, but when it comes right down to it, Ted’s willing to go out on a limb to help his friend and family.”

Who Else Stars in The Ted TV Show?
In the first film, young John was played by Colton Shires and Bretton Manley while his parents were Helen (Alex Borstein) and Steve Bennett (Ralph Garman). In the new TV series, young John will be played by The Purge and The Orville star Max Burkholder while his parents, who have inexplicably been renamed Susan and Matty Bennett, will be played by Alanna Ubach and Scott Grimes. Joining the family is a new character, a cousin named Blaire, who will be portrayed by Giorgia Whigham.
As for the tone, MacFarlane had this to say aboutthe tone of the new series, and how it will relate to the first movie:
“Tonally we’re sticking pretty close to the first movie. I think people who’ve enjoyed the first movie and enjoyed that tone are going to be pretty happy with what we’re doing here. We’re going with what worked. But we’re at the same time, exploring some new ground and kind of building up a past for John and Ted that we hadn’t really delved into in the film. But I think fans of ‘Ted’ are going to be very happy with this show.”
As of now, the first episode will air on July 31, 2025 on Peacock.
