At one point in time,Terminator Genisyswas shaping up to be one of the most highly-anticipated movies of 2015, but it never took off the way Paramount had hoped when it debuted in theaters this summer. The sci-fi action sequel opened over the 4th of July weekend in third place, behind holdoversInside OutandJurassic World. The film earned only $89.7 million at the domestic box office. But back in August,Terminator Genisysopened big in China, keeping hopes for a sequel alive. Earlier today,The Hollywood Reporterrevealed that, despite a solid showing in international territories, the previously-planned sequels are now on indefinite hold.
Despite earning just $89.7 million domestically,Terminator Genisyshas performed well overseas, taking in $350.4 million internationally for a globalbox officetotal of $440.1 million. However, the movie, budgeted at $150 million, will still lose money for Paramount. The sequel did manage to pull in $112 million in China alone, but that still wasn’t enough, and now the two planned sequels toTerminator Genisysare dead.
Way back in September 2014, producerDavid Ellison’s Skydance Productions announced that they had issued release dates for twoTerminatorsequels, withTerminator Genisys 2set for August 09, 2025 andTerminator Genisys 3set for July 09, 2025. Paramount and Skydance were also developing aTV seriestie-in, withZack StentzandAshley Miller(Thor,X-Men: First Class) writing the pilot script and executive producing. It seems unlikely this project will move forward as well.
It’s worth noting that the rights to the entire franchise will revert back toJames Cameronin the year 2019, which is likely why Paramount and Skydance had set 2017 and 2018 release dates for their planned follow-ups. With that being said,James Cameronwill be wrapping up his trio ofAvatarby then, withAvatar 2,Avatar 3andAvatar 4set for release in 2017, 2018 and 2019, respectively. It’s possible that he could direct another movie himself, or he could license the rights to Skydance and Paramount.
Terminator GenisysbroughtArnold Schwarzeneggerback to the franchise, playing Pops, an aging Terminator who serves as Sarah Connor’s (Emilia Clarke) “father figure.“Jai Courtneystars as Kyle Reese, who goes back in time to save Sarah, only to realize that she doesn’t need saving.Jason Clarkestars as John Connor, with a supporting cast that includesJ.K. Simmons,Matt Smith,Douglas Smith,Sandrine Holt,Byung-hun LeeandCourtney B. Vance. Are you disappointed that no sequels are happening? Or should this franchise be killed off once and for all?
