InThe Man Who Killed Don Quixote, anadvertising executive jumps back and forth in timebetween 21st century London and 17th century La Mancha, where Don Quixote mistakes him for Sancho Panza. The movie wrapped production nearly a year ago and things have been a little quiet ever since. Here’s what director Terry Gilliam had to say about the character of Don Quixote, via the official website for the movie.
“Don Quixote is a dreamer,an idealist and a romantic, determined not to accept the limitations of reality, marching on regardless of setbacks, as we have done. We’ve been at it so long that the idea of actually finishing shooting this ‘clandestine’ film, is pretty surreal. Any sensible person would have given up years ago but sometimes pig-headed dreamers win in the end, so thank you to all of the ill paid fantasists and believers who have joined to make this longstanding dream a reality!”
Terry Gilliam has been trying toadapt Miguel de Cervantes y Saavedra’s Don Quixote novelsince the 90s. At various points, actors like Johnny Depp had been attached. The movie’s troubles were chronicled in the 2002 documentaryLost in La Mancha, which is the closestThe Man Who Killed Don Quixoteever came to the big screen.
The cast for the movie includes Jonathan Pryce, Adam Driver, Olga Kurylenko, Stellan Skarsgård and Jordi Mollà. There were plans for a world premiere at Cannes this year, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to be happening. So still, we wait. Amazon Studios will be distributing the movie, which doesn’t have a release date yet. Be sure to check out the first trailer forAmazonproductionThe Man Who Killed Don Quixote
