The Batmanactor Barry Keoghan has officially addressed all the whispers about Joker’s return in Matt Reeves' superhero universe. James Gunn previouslyshut down the rumorabout Keoghan’s Joker getting his own HBO TV spinoff afterThe Penguin, but the iconic villain is still expected to appear in the epic crime saga at some point. The actor himself has now weighed in on his next potential appearance, and it may make fans queasy about his role inThe Batmanfranchise.

While on theHappy, Sad, Confusedpodcast, Keoghan was asked about his brief but impressive debut as the Joker inThe Batman. As he talked about the importance of the role within the context of previous award-winning performances, he sprinkled some doubt about his next opportunity to play the villain. Although most fans expect him to play a big part inThe Batmansequels,it seems Keoghan has yet to be contacted about appearing in them. It’s not unusual for actors to not know if they’re in a high-profile sequel until closer to the production start, but he presumably dispels any rumor about a Joker spinoff while also confirming he doesn’t know when or how he factors into the next films.

Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle in The Batman

“It’s a big one, but I am going to say that, if the opportunity came about, yes, I’d love to explore, and given the opportunity, really dive into it. But I have not been contacted, I’ve not heard anything.”

The Batman: Part IIscript is complete, according to Reeves, who co-wrote it with Mattson Tomlin. If not in his own HBO spinoff, it makes the most sense for Keoghan to appear inPart IIdue to his Arkham tease and the deleted scene released shortly after the film’s theatrical run. However, there is a chance the Clown Prince of Crime is saved for the third film in Reeves' Batman trilogy, or in a cameo role in another television series. Whatever the case may be,The Batmanuniverse is here to stay, so it’s only a matter of time before the Joker is back on our screens.

Next ‘The Batman’ Spinoff Could Still Feature Joker

In addition to a possibleThe PenguinSeason 2, it’s already been confirmed thatanother spinoff is in the works at HBOfromThe Batmanuniverse. The most recent reports suggest that theArkham Asylumseries is no longer moving forward, which would have been the perfect gateway for the Joker to make an appearance. Additionally, a rumored Catwoman spinoff starring Zoë Kravitz is not in the cards, despite rampant speculation. This makes another Joker appearance beforeThe Batman: Part IIincreasingly unlikely, but as long as things take place in Gotham, Joker can always find a way. Fans will just have to wait a while until that happens.

HBO Officially Addresses ‘The Batman’ Catwoman Spinoff Rumors in Disappointing Update

Fans purring for a Catwoman spinoff may want to look away.

One of the most speculated villains for a spinoff project is Scarecrow, who got teased inThe Penguin. Since it’s doubtful he’ll be the main villain in the film series, an opportunity to introduce him via his own show, after a possible appearance inThe Batman: Part II, could make a lot of sense. The Penguindirector Craig Zobelpreviously said that he wants to see Poison Ivy get her own spinoff, but since Reeves wants to keep things “grounded,” that character seems unlikely.
