The drug war between Oz Cobb (Colin Farrell) and Sofia Falcone (Cristin Millioti) inThe Penguinmay have blown a literal hole in Gotham City, the show itself has been a major boon for Gotham’s real-life counterpart, New York City. While critics and audiences sung the praises of the show when it was released earlier this year, and guilds and awards bodies are prepping to give the show all the awards in the world next year, New York City’s Mayor has praised the show for bolstering the city’s economy.
According to statistics released by theMayor’s Office of Media & Entertainment,The Penguinshooting in New York contributed over $134.7 million to the city.Calling all box office junkies, prepare to get nerdy, because the figure has been broken down into detailed categories. Over $73 million went to the wages of over 2,200 local cast and crew. Another $60.8 million went towards local economic activity. Smaller cash injections were also outlined, including props and set dressing ($5.4 million), transportation and car rentals ($2.1 million), local catering ($2.1 million), hotels and lodging ($1.5 million), and those, oh so important location fees and permits ($6.3 million). Who knew financial statistics and economic figures were so riveting? Definitely not us.

The Penguinshot for a total of 112 days in and around New York. The production was spread across all five New York City boroughs, and even Long Island and Westchester County. As a result, the show was granted the prestigious “Made in NY” production title (not to be confused with the “I heart NY” t-shirts), as a result of 75% or more of the shoot taking place in the state. To celebrate, Commissioner of New York City’s Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment,Pat Swinney Kaufman, took to social media, writing:
“We’re over the moon that #MadeinNY series “The Penguin” was predominantly shot in NYC, contributing to the city’s multi-billion dollar film and TV economic engine by supporting local businesses and providing jobs for New Yorkers!”
