A naive young girl sells a video player with a haunted tape to an unsuspecting couple in a new clip fromSadako Vs Kayako, a.k.a.The Ring Vs. The Grudge. Although it has already hit theaters in Japan, the film will have its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival as part of the festival’s Midnight Madness genre program, before it debuts in the U.S. on the Shudder streaming platform later this year. The clip reveals that at least one big change was made fromThe Ringfranchise mythology.
After viewing a legendary cursed videotape, Natsumi (Aimi Satsukawa) discovers she has only two days before she will be killed by the demonic entity known as Sadako. The only way to break the curse: pitting the demon Sadako againstKayako, an accursed spirit possessing a haunted house where everyone who enters disappears. This clip, which debuted atVulture, appears to take place early on in the story, showcasing a young girl who tells her family about the video player she just sold at her parents' shop, with a cursed tape inside.
If you are familiar withThe Ringfranchise, you know those who watch thehaunted tapehave seven days to live, not two days. Here, that mythology is given a twist. This Japanese supernatural horror film is directed byKoji Shiraishi(Carved: The Slit-Mouthed Woman,Grotesque).Sadako vs. Kayakois a crossover of the long-running and massively popular Ring and Ju-on series of films - and this marks the 14th film for the Ring series and the 12th film in the Ju-on series.
Sadako vs. Kayakohas already made an early impression in North America after a video of Sadako and Kayako participating in the ceremonial pitch of a baseball game, tied to the Japanese release of the film, went viral. The excitement and anticipation around the next installment in both franchises will soon extend to Shudder members later this year. The streaming service Shudder picked up the North American rights to the film in August, although an exact premiere date has not been issued by thestreaming service
