TheStar Warsfranchise has certainly had its share of ups and downs over the past decade. But most fans will agree that 2017’sThe Last Jedi, directed byRian Johnson, is the lowest moment in the franchise’s modern era. Johnson, who has since gone on to find great acclaim with theKnives Outfranchise andPoker Faceseries, is also behind the most divisiveStar Warsfilm so far, and, despite the movie being panned by most fans, the director said he is still open to returning to complete his once-planned trilogy.
Rian Johnson recently sat down with The Independent to discuss the ongoing second season ofPoker Face, as well as theupcomingWake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.During the conversation, the director broached the subject ofStar Warsand said that his experience withThe Last Jedihasn’t left a bad, blue-milk-like taste in his mouth. In fact, should he ever get a call back to complete his trilogy, he would be more than open to it. Johnson said:

“I mean, I kind of went down the murder mystery rabbit hole – I’m focused on making other stuff. But that wouldn’t rule out it happening down the line. If I get back in the Star Wars universe someday, I’d be the happiest person.”
That AI ‘Star Wars’ Project Is the Most Embarrassing Thing in the Franchise, and That’s Saying Something
Greedo shooting first, a CGI Jabba the Hutt, and “somehow Palpatine returned” are no longer the worst things in ‘Star Wars.’
WhenThe Last Jediwas released, it received immense applause from critics, holding a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But, fans quickly turned against the film. The bigoted side of the fan base (which is far larger thanStar Warsfans would care to admit) took issue with almost everything about the movie. But even casual fans pointed out flaws in the overall story, and its depiction of popular characters like Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker. Luckily, even the most malicious of backlash hasn’t put Johnson off the franchise. He continued:

“I always want to make this clear: it’s not like I’ve gone through a living hell or something. I’ve had the kind of experience that you only dream about as a filmmaker. That’s left me a bigger Star Wars fan than I ever was, which is really something, because I grew up with it as the bedrock of my childhood.”
What Happened to Rian Johnson’s ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy?
Johnson’s newStar Warstrilogy might feel like a distant memory to mostStar Warsfans now, especially with how much content Disney has churned out sinceThe Last Jedi. But, in the build-up to the film’s release, Disney announced that Rian Johnson would also be working on a brand-new trilogy for the franchise.
Many fans assumed that the dicey reception toThe Last Jedikilled any hopes of Johnson’s trilogy. But the director’s passion simply took him elsewhere. Fans of the director are grateful that he moved on fromStar WarsafterThe Last Jedi, not because of the controversy surrounding hisStar Warsfilm, but because it led him todirect the incredibleKnives Outmovies.
