The Last of UsSeason 2 is just over a month away and, alongside the return of Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsay), the new season will introduce a third main character to the franchise: Abby, played byKaitlyn Dever. Abby was introduced inThe Last of Us Part IIvideo game as a playable antagonist (or protagonist, depending on how you viewed the plot) and quickly became one of the most divisive characters in the entire franchise. Dever is already fighting an uphill battle playing the controversial character, and the actress recently revealed that she’s well aware of the discourse.
During an interview with Screen Rant at SXSW, Dever revealed that it’s “hard” not to go online to see the strong opinions about Abby as a character and her casting in Season 2 ofThe Last of Us. “Well, it’s hard not to see those things on the internet,” she began. Despite some fans being against her casting — Dever and showrunner Craig Mazin decided to alterAbby’s muscular appearance from the video game— the actress promises to do the character justice in Seasons 2 and 3. She continued:

“It’s hard not to stop myself from looking at it every once in a while, especially going into this, for sure. And I want to do this character justice and make the fans proud by bringing her to life in this kind of way.”
HBO Finally Reveals How Long ‘The Last of Us’ Will… Last

During the interview, Dever vaguely addressed the changes made to Abby in HBO’s adaptation. The actress revealed that her “main focus was just the collaboration between Neil [Druckmann] and Craig, and making sure I was really getting to the core of who she is and what drives her and her emotional state; her anger and her frustration and her grief and all of that. I wanted to make sure that that was what I was focusing most of my energy on.”
‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 Introduces a New Type of Threat
Abby won’t be the only one trying tokill Joel and Ellie in Season 2 ofThe Last of Us,as the latest trailer just revealed a painful feature from the divisive second video game. As well as the cannibalistic gangs, the leftover Fireflies, the Seraphites, the Washington Liberation Front, and FEDRA, there is a new type of zombie to contend with. InThe Last of Us Part II, players didn’t just have to avoid clickers and bloaters, but also spore infected areas. While Ellie was immune to the fungal spores, other characters had to use gas masks to navigate the areas, as breathing just the smallest amount would lead to infection.
The second season ofThe Last of Uspremieres on HBO and Max on Apr. 13.Alongside Pascal, Ramsay, and Dever, Season 2 also stars Isabela Merced, Jeffrey Wright, Gabriel Luna, and Catherine O’Hara. The show has already been greenlit for a third season, although no release date has been revealed. Based on the events ofThe Last of Us Part II, expect a third season to continue the lengthy storyline for another batch of episodes.
