Charlize Theron, the star of films likeMad Max: Fury Road,Monster, and the upcoming sequel to the action hit,The Old Guard, has shown nothing but appraisal forUma Thurman, and says the actor should have won an Academy Award for her role inKill Bill. Thurman is joining Theron inThe Old Guard 2,Netflix’s continuation of the 2020 action superhero feature, marking the first time they’re together in an action movie.
Theron was a recent guest on the talk showJimmy Kimmel Liveto promoteThe Old Guard 2. Kimmel asked the actor about co-starring with theHollywood legend and star of filmslikeGattacaandLes Misérables, and she responded that she had always wanted to make a movie with her:

“We knew each other kind of offhand, but I knew her from being a massive fan, just watching her work and always wanted to do something with her. Because when I came into the action world, she was really, to me, like, the sensei. She was the OG.”

Eternity has a price.
Kimmel then made a very clear point that Thurman should have won the Academy Award for Best Actress inKill Bill, Tarantino’s modern martial arts classic. In the film, Thurman plays Beatrix, a survivor of an attack who goes on a revenge journey to exterminate everyone involved with the attempted murder. Theron then confirmed if she agrees with the recognition that never happened:
“A hundred percent. I think men get a lot of credit for these movies. What she did in that film was just so unbelievable. And to me, she’s just such a bad***. Since I’ve been in action movies, I’m like, ‘Who do I want to like, work with and do an action sequence with?’ It’s always been Uma Thurman. Always.

“She’s really tall, she’s very intimidating, but she’s really sweet and kind and thoughtful and so hardworking. I was definitely intimidated by her, especially when she showed up, and she was given one sword, and we had worked out this whole sequence, and she went, ‘I think I want two swords.'”
‘Kill Bill’ Is Uma Thurman’s Most Important Film
There’s no doubt thatKill Bill, both volumes, feature Thurman’s most important film role. Before that, Thurman had mostly played the cute girl and romantic counterpart. Even inPulp Fiction, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, Thurman plays a crime lord’s wife, but her character feels a bit underdeveloped.Kill Billgave her the opportunityto fully exploit her range and become an authentic killer. One with a reason, of course.
After Quentin Tarantino’sPulp FictionandJackie Brownreceived nods at the Academy Awards,Kill Billwas set to get a few nominations as well, and Thurman was the safe bet. Her performance in the filmwascutting-edge and completely different from what she had done before. Unfortunately, the martial arts revenge movie was mentioned zero times when the nominations were announced, and Thurman became an unrecognized action star. It reminded viewers of the Academy’s refusal to nominate Linda Hamilton for her performance inTerminator 2: Judgment Day, arguably one of the best action performances by an actress in cinema history.
