We recently learned that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s long-awaitedBlack Adammovie is finally, truly getting off the ground at Warner Bros. The wrestler-turned-actor has been attached to the role for the better part of a decade and, after a lengthy development process, it’s now got a production timetable, a director and a release date. As it turns out, they’ve also locked down an accomplished cinematographer, as Larry Sher, who most recently shotJoker, has boarded the project.
Dwayne Johnsonshared thefirst Black Adam posterlast week, confirming the movie will hit theaters in winter 2021. Now, it seems, he’s going to be providing little updates for us here and there when he can. Taking to Twitter, Johnson, in response to a recent interview the cinematographer did, revealed that Sher will be the man shooting this latest DC Comics adaptation. Given that Sher’s previous work in the DC universe became an unexpected billion-dollar success story, this bodes well. Johnson had this to say about it.
“Larry Sher is a brilliant DP and a great dude! We just worked together on Jungle Cruise and he’ll also shoot Black Adam. Glad you spent some time with him, Frost.”
Larry Sher has had something of an interesting, mixed career. His first cinematographer credit came in 1995’sCaptain Jack. Aside fromJoker, he’s worked with Todd Phillips on a number of his comedies such asThe Hangovermovies andDue Date, as well asWar Dogs. Some of his other credits includeI Love You, Man,The Dictatorand, more recently,Godzilla: King of the Monsters. While Sher has done a comic book movie before, it’s safe to say thatBlack Adamwill be quite a bit different than his previous trip to the DC sandbox, with theBlack Adam production happening in 2020.
Jokerwas an R-rated, gritty, lower-budget (relatively speaking) character study. It hardly resembles any other modern comic book movie out there. Be that as it may, the movie went on to become the most profitable comic book movie ever made and recently surpassed Christopher Nolan’sThe Dark Knight. The unique look of the movie, which Larry Sher is largely responsible for, can’t be overlooked when it comes to divvying out praise for its success. Plus,Godzilla: King of the Monstersproved that Sher can handle something on a much larger scale.
Black Adamwas originally supposed to be theShazam villain, but plans shifted along the way. Dwayne Johnson became a bigger star and wanted to turn the villain into more of an anti-hero. So that’s the way Warner Bros. is going with it. Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows,The Jungle Cruise) is in the director’s chair. There is no word yet on who else may be tapped to star alongside Johnson. Production is set to begin in summer 2020, withBlack Adamscheduled to hit theaters on August 19, 2025.
