Warning: Spoilers forThe WinchestersSeason OneSinceThe Winchesterspremiered in October 2022, and much to the delight ofSupernaturalfans, the first episodes of the show’s inaugural season have managed to fill the void left behind by the original show. While the prequel doesn’t feature the monster-hunting brother duo of its predecessor, it definitely channels the same tone and style of the original as it follows Mary Campbell (Meg Donnelly) and John Winchester (Drake Rodger), Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean’s (Jensen Ackles) parents.
Returning home after the war, John bumps into Mary outside the town’s movie theater, but nothing more comes out of their initial encounter. Only after they cross paths for a second time, while they both pursue information regarding their fathers, does the show begin to unfold. Mary’s dad, Samuel Campbell (Tom Welling), is missing after going on a hunt by himself, while John receives aposthumous letterfrom his father leading him to a clubhouse for the Men of Letters. Subsequently, they quickly discover a threat to all existence in the form of the Akrida, anotherworldly species of monsterwho have attempted to take over the world in the past and are back at it again.

The fall finale ofThe Winchestersfound a wounded, but alive, Samuel Campbell rescuing John and Mary from the Akrida as he banished them to another dimension using the Ostium. Now that Mary’s goal of finding her father has come to fruition, the plot for the rest of season one is anyone’s guess. However, there are quite a few plot points viewers want to see.
Clarification About the Biggest Plot Hole of the Series
One of the biggest plot holes as a result ofThe Winchestersis howthe prequelitself can even take place given what fans already know about John Winchester and his role inSupernatural. Audiences of the original show will remember that Mary’s death was the catalyst for how brothers Sam and Dean become hunters in the first place. John was initially in the dark about everything monster related, so his involvement in theScooby Doo-like gang in the prequel raises some serious red flags.

During the later seasons ofSupernatural, viewers discovered that Mary came from a long line of hunters and John was in fact a legacy of the Men of Letters. However, he was never involved in the fraternity because he was unaware of its existence as well as the underground world of monster hunting. As far as Sam and Dean knew, their father began his days of hunting following the death of their mother, which inherently makes the prequel problematic.
At the beginning ofThe Winchesters, Dean, who narrates the series, explains there will be some surprises along the way and indicates there are substantial things viewers do not yet know about his parents. Given everything audiences have seen so far, the final episodes of season one are the time to reveal some of those surprises. The series doesn’t need to clear up this plot hole entirely, but viewers need something to continue to believe the prequel is necessary for theSupernaturaluniverse.

An Explanation of Where Samuel Campbell Has Been
Samuel Campbell has been missing in action since the show began. Now that he’s back, an explanation as to where he’s been is sure to be priority number one for the season’s final episodes. He disappeared unexpectedly but managed to leave plenty of clues for Mary to follow, which raises a lot of questions as to the nature of his vanishing. Was he taken? Was he running from something? Is there something bigger happening that he’s keeping from Mary? Diving deeper into his whereabouts during the past seven episodes is sure to take a front-row seat as viewers learn more about Sam and Dean’s grandfather.
Appearances of Beloved Supernatural Characters
One of the most exciting aspects ofThe Winchestersis its potential to bring back beloved characters fromSupernatural. As the rest of the season unfolds, including characters from years past would be worth watching. Discovering how ayoung Bobby Singerencountered Sam and Dean’s parents and watching that relationship grow would add details to the story fans only know from the perspective of Sam and Dean.

Furthermore, seeing previous angels or demons make an appearance would be a fun nod to the viewers and introduce elements fromSupernaturalthat aren’t immediately present in the show. Demons are a given and have already made a few appearances, but watching someone like Richard Speight Jr. reprise his role as the Trickster/Loki/Archangel Gabriel would be fun to watch. Although writers would then need to address the issue of his vessel, it’s surely a hiccup they’d be able to clear up with ease especially if it meant bringing back certain actors for the prequel.
The Winchestersreturns on January 24 on The CW. In the meantime, catch up on the first seven episodes of season one now streaming on The CW app.
