The full list of nominees for the Golden Globe Awards was announced on Monday, and whileTom Cruisehas garnered a lot of praise for his starring role in the massively successful sequelTop Gun: Maverick, he wasn’t nominated for an acting award. This may be for the best, as Cruise has been on the outs with the ceremony and its organizers since last year. In 2021, he returned the three Golden Globes he’d won in prior years due to thecontroversy involving the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

At the time, NBC had dropped the telecast of the ceremony due to the controversy. Amazon and Netflix had also cut ties with the HFPA. This all followed calls for reform after it was uncovered that there wasn’t a single Black journalist among the HFPA’s 87 members. HFPA president Ali Sar released a statement addressing the controversy, noting that reform measures would be put into place.

“Today’s overwhelming vote to reform the Association reaffirms our commitment to change,” the statement read. “That’s why we’ve already taken some action that will allow us to make swift progress. Because we understand the urgency and issue of transparency, we will be continuously updating the members as we move forward in making our organization more inclusive and diverse. Again, we understand that the hard work starts now. We remain dedicated to becoming a better organization and an example of diversity, transparency, and accountability in the industry.”

Various celebrities had also been there to criticize the HFPA, such as Scarlett Johansson and Mark Ruffalo. Cruise had reportedly gone the extra mile by returning all three of his Golden Globes. He previously won Best Actor in 1990 forBorn on the Fourth of Julyand in 1997 forJerry Maguire. He also won Best Supporting Actor in 2000 forMagnolia.
