Mike Flanagan’sThe Life of Chuckwill be heading to digital platforms starting Tuesday, July 29. Purchase and rent options will be available on services like Fandango at Home, Apple TV, and Prime Video, among others. The film tells the story of Charles “Chuck” Krantz and the significant moments of his life that would ultimately prove to be of greater importance to himself and others than he could have possibly imagined. The movie is based on the short story of the same name, which was released in King’s book “If It Bleeds,” a collection of short stories.

The director’s latest film is a much more meditative and wholesome feature than anything he has done before, which also makes it more than worth watching when it releases on digital this week.

‘The Life of Chuck’ Is a Break in Pattern For Mike Flanagan
The Life of Chuckmainly received positive reviews, obtaining an 81% “certified fresh” rating on the review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes, as well as an 88% positive audience score. The movie is both uplifting and tragic, making the life of one man feel like an entire universe in and of itself. Following the rave reviews at its TIFF premiere, the movie was quickly acquired by Neon, though it wouldn’t receive a wide release until June 2025.
Mike Flanagan isn’t slowing down with his Stephen King adaptations, as the filmmaker’s next big projects in development include aCarrieseries and a show based onThe Dark Tower series of novels, both of which are for the Prime Video streaming service. Outside these two projects, Flanagan is also leaning into his horror roots with theClayfacescript, which he wrote for DC Studios. The script was fast-tracked by James Gunn and Peter Safran into a feature film, directed by James Watkins, and is set for release next September.

It’s been a big year for Stephen King adaptations, with the short storyThe Monkeyalso being made into a feature film by Osgood Perkins, the director ofLonglegs. There are also still two more Stephen King films to look forward to this year:The Long Walk, which recently got a new trailerand had a big presence at San Diego Comic-Con, andThe Running Man, which Edgar Wright will direct. Still,The Life of Chuckstands tall as one of the more unique King adaptations, and will surely find more success on streaming.
