After a critically acclaimed first season in 2014, HBO renewedTrue Detectivefor an eight-episodeSeason 2that aired last year. We never heard if the network officially renewed series creatorNic Pizzolatto’s hit show, and HBO hasn’t issued any updates since then. During the network’s TCA summer tour presentation, HBO’s chief of programmingCasey Bloysrevealed that the show isn’t dead.

Both seasons of the show told completely different stories with different cast members.Matthew McConaughey, who starred in Season 1 withWoody Harrelson, revealed that he would like to star in Season 3.Vulturecaught up withCasey Bloysat the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, where he had this to say about Season 3 ofTrue Detective.

“It is not dead, but there’s no take on a third season yet.”

Bloysadded that he would be open to bringing on another writer to helpNic Pizzolattowith writing the scripts. The series creator has written every episode of the show by himself, with many fans criticizing the writer for a lackluster Season 2 after a critically-acclaimed first season. Former head of programmingMichael Lombardoeven told fans to blame him for the divisive Season 2, claiming that he had “rushed” the writing process.

In the second season, three police officers and a career criminal must navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder.Colin Farrellplays Ray Velcoro, a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him, whileVince Vaughnis set to play Frank Semyon, a career criminal in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner.

Rachel McAdamsalso stars as Ani Bezzerides, a Ventura County Sheriff’s detective whose uncompromising ethics put her at odds with others and the system she serves, whileTaylor Kitschstars as Paul Woodrugh, a war veteran and motorcycle officer for the California Highway Patrol, running from a difficult past and the sudden glare of a scandal that never happened. If the show keeps its anthology format, none of these characters will likely return. but we’ll have to wait and see.
