A sequel to the 1996 disaster movieTwisteris now in development, and the latest word on the project is that filming is intended to begin in early 2023. Recent reports suggest that the search for a director is currently underway for the film, simply dubbedTwisters. It has also been reported that producers want original star Helen Hunt to return, no doubt inspired by the recent success of legacy sequels, but not much else has been revealed about the plot.
While Hunt may or may not return, some fans might be wondering about some of the other characters. Sadly, Bill Paxton and Phillip Seymour Hoffman have sinced passed away and will not be able to reprise their respective roles in the movie. Others in their group of storm chasers could potentially appear to join Hunt, but as of now, there hasn’t been any indication of any other original actors getting involved.
One actor who appeared in the original film wasSean Whalenas assistant navigator Allan Sanders. Because he’s been getting asked aboutTwistersfrequently since the recent update his the press, Whalen took toInstagramto offer a statement. He says that while he’d love to be involved in the sequel, Whalen notes that he doesn’t know anything about it, though he adds that he wouldn’t be able to admit it if he did. In any case, the actor remains grateful to have been a part of the original movie, whether or not he has a spot inTwisters. From the Instagram post:
“TWISTER SEQUEL: I am so grateful to have been a part of this original movie. It has helped me travel to places I never would’ve gone to and to meet hundreds of people I never would’ve met. That said, there is no need to keep asking if I am involved in the sequel. I wouldn’t know for months and if I was involved they probably wouldn’t let me tell you anyway. I am assuming they will pick maybe a few original people and I may or may not be one of them. Obviously, I would love to be a part of it, But it’s all good. I’m just happy to be part of the Twister original.”

Twister Is Finally Getting a Sequel
Twisterwas a blockbuster when it was released in 1996, managing to become the second-highest grossing movie that year. Even so, it was not given an official sequel, but it wasn’t for a lack of trying. Last year, Helen Hunt told Mitch Cohen on his showWatch What Happens Livethat she had personally pitched a new sequel that would follow anew, diverse group of storm chasers. She says the idea was rejected at that time.
“I tried to get it made. With Daveed [Diggs] and Rafael [Casal] and me writing it, and all Black and brown storm chasers, and they wouldn’t do it. I was going to direct it… We could barely get a meeting, and this is in June of 2020 when it was all about diversity. It would have been so cool.”
Twistersdoes not yet have a release date. Perhaps when the movie does arrive, it will have Hunt’s involvement, given the interest she’s had in doing a new movie. And maybe Whalen will be able to return for a special appearance as well.
