Blumhouse has released the first trailer for their upcoming sci-fi/horror flickUpgrade. The movie starsLogan Marshall-Greenin the lead role, who many in the more general moviegoing public became familiar with last summer inSpider-Man: Homecoming. This gives him a chance to lead a movie on his own, but this is certainly a departure from the Marvel-style comic book movie.Upgrademore or less turns him into a superhero, but an ultra-violent one in what looks to be one of the more inventive genre movies coming our way in 2018.
The trailer forUpgradeis filled with eyebrow-raising shots and action, which all come as a result of the interesting premise. Basically, a guy who can’t walk is implanted with an experimental chip that can take over his body and turn him into Jason Bourne. Only this movie ishardcore R-rated, so there’s a lot more blood and violence. The tone is also a bit cheeky, with quite a bit of humor thrown in to go along with the violence. If this can deliver on the promises made in the trailer, this could be one you definitely want to mark down on your calendar.
In Blumhouse’sUpgrade, which is directed bySawandInsidiouswriter Leigh Whannell, Grey Trace, a technophobe in autopian near-futurewhen computers control nearly everything, from cars to crime-surveillance, is paralyzed in a freak mugging that leaves his wife dead. But when a billionaire technologist offers him an experimental paralysis cure, an implanted computer chip called STEM, Grey finds that the chip has a voice and a mind of its own. Together Grey and STEM embark on a mission to avenge his wife’s death.
Upgraderecently debuted at theSXSWfilm festival in Austin, Texas and was received quite well. The movie won the midnight audience award and, though there aren’t a ton of reviews to go on just yet, so far, things are looking good forUpgrade. As of this writing, the movie has a 75 percent approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with eight reviews counted. It’s been hailed as inventive and ambitious, in addition to being brutal and fun. That much is certainly highlighted in the trailer.
Leigh Whannell doesn’t have a lot of experience directing, as his only other feature wasInsidious: Chapter 3. However, he’s got a ton of experience as a writer and producer. As for Blumhouse, they’ve made quite the name for themselves as a studio in recent years, with movies like the Oscar-winningGet Outgarnering critical acclaim, and franchises likeThe PurgeandParanormal Activityraking in the dough at the box office. Could this be their next under-the-radar hit? We’ll have to see once the movie arrives in theaters on June 1.
