Daredevil: Born Againhas been an incredibly successful entry in the MCU. As the finale approaches,Ayelet Zurer, who plays the formidable and ruthless Vanessa Fisk, explained how the wife of Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk doesn’t think the same as other characters, and, in turn, revealed how all the characters in the series are playing out its real hidden theme. Although it can be easy to believe that all MCU shows and movies are just about grown adults in costumes saving the world in their own way, Zurer saysBorn Againis actually about something very different.

Vanessa Fisk’s story has not played out without its challenges, but in recent episodes, she has proven to be just as deadly as her husband. For Zurer, that makes her a very interesting and complex character to play, and those complexities are whatDaredevil: Born Againis really about. The actress told MovieWeb’sGeorge Edelman:

“She thinks in a very, very different way than any human being would think. You know, she’s kind of like a lion tamer in a way, with [Fisk]. But at the same time, she’s very calculated, but then very emotional, like she’s protecting something very, very vulnerable on the inside. So, I think she’s very interesting. She’s multi-dimensional, and that’s what makes it interesting. Also, the themes in the show are what makes it interesting. It’s not about superhero power. It’s really about, you know, your true nature, and can you fight your true nature, and questions of that nature that makes it really, really interesting.”
Vanessa Fisk Was Responsible for a Character Death That Outraged Fans
Daredevil: Born Againopened withthe death of original Daredevil favorite Foggy Nelson(Elden Henson). After being gunned down by Benjamin Poindexter aka Bullseye (Wilson Bethel), Foggy’s death and Bulleye’s subsequent incarceration were then left behind as the story unfolded around Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) trying to fight his need to return to crime-fighting under the guise of Daredevil, Wilson Fisk continuing to build his empire, and Muse taking on a villain role in the middle of proceedings.
However, despite all this,Episode 8 revealed that the truth behind Foggy’s deathwas actually linked to the one character no one expected to have instructed the assassination: Vanessa Fisk. As Matt uncovered the truth in the final moments of the latest episode, Bulleye’s return with an attempt on Wilson Fisk’s life meant that this truth bomb is now still to be unpacked in the final two episodes of the season next week.

While Vanessa’s motives are currently unclear, during her interview, he did drop a possible hint at why she ordered Foggy’s death – for the love of her husband. Zurer added:
“She loves him, but now in this this season, she questions trust, and he questions trust. So, I think that’s really the theme that goes above everything else. Whatever they’re doing, it’s all about that. But the undercurrent is definitely love. I mean, they do. I don’t think she does anything for power, per se. I think Vanessa does, you know, we do things for something that’s, you know, bigger and deeper for her, I think it’s to gain safety.”

While Vanessa’s true motives for having Foggy murdered are still to be delved into, it is clear that there is nothing she would not do to ensure the survival of the Fisk partnership and the power that comes with it as a byproduct.
