Many fans assumed he would be coming back so the show could finally answer one of its biggest mysteries, the identity of Jon Snow’s mother. One of the biggest fan theories about Snow’s mother is known as “R+L=J,” meaning Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark are actually his parents, which would give Snow a very strong claim to the Iron Throne. While Ned Stark had often referred to Jon as hisbastard child, this theory claims Ned Stark’s sister Lyanna actually gave birth to Jon Snow, and that Ned Stark is not actually Jon’s father. While it remains to be seen if this mystery will be solved this season, last night’s episode offered a hint that this theory may be valid.

The preview for this episode teased that some in Castle Black think that Jon Snow is a “god,” for coming back to life.
