Superhero movies have been dominating the box office landscape over the past few years, with current blockbusters like Marvel’sCaptain America: Civil War($940.8 million worldwide), Warner Bros.‘Batman v Superman($868.8 million worldwide) and 20th Century Fox’sDeadpool($762.3 million worldwide) representing three of the top five movies released in 2016. And one of today’s most prominent filmmakers is taking notice. While doing press at the Cannes Film Festival over the weekend,The BFGdirectorSteven Spielbergrevealed what his favoriteMarvel movieis, and the answer may surprise you.

The filmmaker arrived at the Cannes Film Festival this weekend for the world premiere of hisRoald DahladaptationThe BFG, ahead of its July 1 theatrical release. While doing press with Omelete, the filmmaker was asked what his favorite Marvel Studios movie is, which happens to be his favorite superhero movie as well, 2014’sGuardians of the Galaxy. Here’s what the filmmaker had to say in his statement below.

“I really likeRichard Donner’sSuperman,Nolan’sDark Knightand the firstIron Manmovie, but the superhero movie that most impressed me wasGuardians of the Galaxy. When it ended, I left the cinema with the feeling that I had just experienced something new, free of cynicism and without concern for being gritty when necessary.”

After the filmmaker’s interview was released,Guardians of the GalaxydirectorJames Gunntook to his Twitter page, revealing thatSteven Spielberg’s praise ofGuardians of the Galaxyis the “greatest compliment I’ve ever received.” The director also admitted that he was “teary-eyed” after readingSteven Spielberg’s praise, while adding that no one influencedGuardians of the Galaxymore thanSteven Spielberg. Of course,Steven Spielbergcertainly wasn’t alone in praisingGuardians of the Galaxy, which was beloved by fans and critics alike en route to earning $331.1 million domestically and $773.3 million worldwide.

James Gunnis currently in Atlanta filming the highly-anticipated sequelGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which is slated for release on June 06, 2025.
