It’s been nine years since we last sawMatt Damon’s Jason Bourne inThe Bourne Ultimatum, and many fans thought we’d never see him again on the big screen. In the years that followed the 2007 action-thriller,Matt Damonhad stated that he wouldn’t return as Bourne unlessPaul Greengrass, who directed bothThe Bourne SupremacyandThe Bourne Ultimatum, was directing. Back in January 2015, Universal Pictures finally confirmed thatBourne 5was coming, which was later titledJason Bourne. We got our first look at the sequel back in February with thefirst trailer.Entertainment Weeklyrecently caught up with filmmakerPaul Greengrass, who revealed new plot details.

Matt Damonhimself revealed last year that the story is set in the"post-Snowden world", referencing former NSA analyst Edward Snowden, who leaked thousands of classified documents that revealed how the government was spying on the American public. The movie will be exploring the nature of spy agencies and civil liberties. The actor also teased that Bourne is in Europe, with the production shooting in several locations such as Greece and Las Vegas. When asked what this amnesiac super-spy has been up to for the past decade,Paul Greengrasshad this to say to EW.

“He’s been in the shadows of Europe. He’s been active and he’s been doing hard physical work. Definitely not sunning himself on the beach.”

In the intervening years betweenThe Bourne Ultimatumand this adventure,Matt Damonhad often said they hadn’t found a story that was worth returning to the franchise for. While we still don’t have too many plot details,Matt Damonactually co-wrote the script withPaul Greengrassand Christopher Rouse (Captain Phillips,Green Zone). The director also revealed that it wasMatt Damon’s commitment to getting in shape for the movie that really sealed the deal for him.

“You don’t make a movie unless you’re 1000 percent committed to make the best movie we can, and you don’t make this kind of movie unless you think it can be a worthy successor to the other movies we made. That phenomenal Jason Bourne shape was a segment of intent. It gave all of us the most immense shock, because you think ‘Oh my god. This is weird. This is Jason Bourne, and he’s back. That’s sort of exciting.”
