Channing Tatumhas a tradition of stealing things from movie sets, but had to break his habit when playing Gambit inDeadpool & Wolverineas he was “too scared” to try and steal his costume. Playing the card-wielding X-Men character was a dream realized for Tatum, who was meant to star in the role many years ago in a project that found its way into the graveyard of lost movies. However, he was finally able to don the garb of Gambit in this year’s summer blockbuster, as one of the many crowd-pleasing cameos on offer in the film.

Deadpool & Wolverine

A follow-up to the highly successful Deadpool and Deadpool 2 films starring Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth. The third film will be the first in the franchise to be developed under the Marvel Studios banner following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox.

The fact that the role of Gambit has become so special for Tatum makes it a little more sad that he was unable to claim himself a piece of his role, something he admitted he just couldn’t do when taking part inVanity Fair’s lie detector testwith hisBlink Twiceco-stars Zoë Kravitz and Naomi Ackie. When Kravitz questioned Tatum about whether he kept the costume, he responded:

I was too scared to ask. Usually, I steal the very last outfit that I’m in every movie, and I was too scared to do it on this one.

Tatum’s “tradition” certainly seems to suggest he really was the perfect person to take on the role of gentleman’s thief Gambit, and it is a little ironic that the one time he couldn’t manage to leave with his costume was the time he was playing the exact character that might have stolen it. Perhaps everything happens for a reason, and the costume is just sitting there at Marvel Studios waiting for him to return to it again in future.

Will Channing Tatum Play Gambit Again in the MCU?

While there are many questions hanging over the future of Jennifer Garner’s Elektra, Wesley Snipes’ Blade, Dafne Keene’s Laura/X-23, and several other characters who made special appearances inDeadpool & Wolverine,as well as the titular characters themselves, for Channing Tatum, he still feels like he has unfinished business with his character.

In recent interviews forDeadpool & Wolverine, Tatum said that he would do“terrible thing”to get Marvel Studios to consider reviving the lost Gambit movie, and based on the reaction from audiences to his appearance, it is hard to completely rule out the chance of it happening. Of course, Marvel Studios has a very stacked slate right now, and with Disney CEO Bob Iger pulling back the ridiculous output that Kevin Feige and his team were looking to achieve under the guidance of former CEO Bob Chapek, the question is really where they would be able to fit such a project into the schedule.

Deadpool & Wolverine’s Channing Tatum Teases Gambit’s Fate Based on Easily Missed Moment

Channing Tatum teases the future of Gambit after Deadpool & Wolverine and what MCU fans can expect from the card-wielding Cajun superhero.

So perhaps this will be the one and only time we get to see Tatum’s Gambit on screen, and if that is the case, then surely someone in the Marvel Studios costume department could do the right thing and turn a blind eye to the actor slipping in to pick up his dry cleaning one day.
